Excuse my ignorance...

Can you please give us an example on how to do it?

And how to restore it to a HD.

This is like a CLONE on a file right?

thanks for your inputs!

go to terminal

type man dd

Briefly it is a unix utility

And how do you restore to a HD.

You use dd to copy back from the file to your partition.

Obviously not from within OS X (unless its another install). But versions of dd exist for windows, and Linux is a native utility under Linux, so there are many ways of restoring.

No all the "cloners" software are made for Mac machines so you must at least make the drive bootable again manually by using pc_efi_v8!

Always have a bootable disk like "Kalyway's format and make Harddrive bootable" DVD to prepare you new HDD then any backup & restore will work. this includes CCC, Superduper, normal Diskutility or even TimeMachine!

As for the dd.exe command search for "flat image" there is a whole installation by this name but you need and the install procedures explain VERY nicely the different commands!
