Dreamaker
Hi All, My config in signature. I working with Adobe CS3. But I detected very slow action in GUI. Everythink works, but very slow. In Vista all my work goes much faster. In Vista I can open many windows and get fast move. Seems like HDs read/write is very slow. I run a test Xbench... here is a results: Results 148.61 System Info Xbench Version 1.3 System Version 10.5.1 (9B18) Physical RAM 2048 MB Model Mac Pro Drive Type HDT722516DLA380 CPU Test 152.21 GCD Loop 313.66 16.53 Mops/sec Floating Point Basic 149.55 3.55 Gflop/sec vecLib FFT 120.14 3.96 Gflop/sec Floating Point Library 123.74 21.55 Mops/sec Thread Test 232.98 Computation 234.20 4.74 Mops/sec, 4 threads Lock Contention 231.77 9.97 Mlocks/sec, 4 threads Memory Test 213.49 System 241.79 Allocate 343.97 1.26 Malloc/sec Fill 197.60 9607.75 MB/sec Copy 225.26 4652.71 MB/sec Stream 191.12 Copy 176.38 3642.96 MB/sec Scale 183.89 3799.08 MB/sec Add 203.50 4334.92 MB/sec Triad 203.78 4359.32 MB/sec Quartz Graphics Test 187.74 Line 173.45 11.55 Klines/sec [50% alpha] Rectangle 228.92 68.34 Krects/sec [50% alpha] Circle 181.94 14.83 Kcircles/sec [50% alpha] Bezier 184.90 4.66 Kbeziers/sec [50% alpha] Text 178.76 11.18 Kchars/sec OpenGL Graphics Test 176.96 Spinning Squares 176.96 224.48 frames/sec User Interface Test 251.58 Elements 251.58 1.15 Krefresh/sec Disk Test 60.23 Sequential 85.78 Uncached Write 69.13 42.45 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 84.64 47.89 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 88.72 25.96 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 110.16 55.36 MB/sec [256K blocks] Random 46.40 Uncached Write 17.70 1.87 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 85.75 27.45 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 94.07 0.67 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 135.03 25.05 MB/sec [256K blocks] Any ideas? MrRoper
I'm in the same boat, tho my read/write speeds are closer to dreamaker's i'm in the 7's who hooo Not sure if there's an alternative for u to try, I tried a new sata controller kext for nforce. raised my scores quite a bit, but my sata dvd drive would not recognize dvd's anymore. so i had to revert
Λύκος
Anyone have any idea on this? My read/write speeds are ungodly slow as well, makes installing games etc. nearly impossible on OS X. No problem at all on XP. If anyone knows anything, please help. My system specs are in my sig, the OS X machine being Coiotes. Yuusharo
Here's a tip - Don't use XBench. A random number generator would be more accurate. Try geekbench or Cinebench (doesn't test hard drive).

Doesn't make a difference if I use XBench or not. It'd take 30 minutes to transfer a 1 gig app from a DMG file to my HDD regardless of what some app showed me. eddiejclayton
Might as well add me in I'm having the same issues. I'm using a HighPoint RocketRAID 2300 with 4x 80GB HDD's in RAID10 and 2x 500GB HDD's in RAID1 (using onboard SATA). I'm seeing some slowdown, mainly with aperture and Photoshop CS3

jacob08
as stupid as this sounds the only way i can get my system to run fast is by running random terminal commands...otherwise it takes like 10 seconds for the menu from a right-click to go awayneat so correction to my previous post... the machine also runs a good speed when its not plugged in... jansan
All you guys should have a look at your activity monitor (check "all processes"). There is a kernel task issue. The process eats all CPU. try searching for it around the forums, cause your descriptions seem like fitting to this problem. It can be cured :-) But this is connected only to actions on the HDD (writing/reading to/from hard disk causes system slowdown to absurdity). I have generally slow performence compared to Tiger and other distros of Leopard and Windows (currently running Iatkos 10.5.1). Everything works but very slowly, while read/write speeds are ok. Any ideas what to look for before giving up on Iatkos? Can it be related to wireless (zydas 1211) recently installed? Thanks in advance here some specs: Nvidia Gforce 6200 PCI Intel Pentium 4 3.07 Ghz
jadphoto14
I'm having this same issue. Everything is incredibly slow. In fact, so slow I have unplugged my leopard hard drive and plugged in my XP drive to type this. I just got done installing iAtkos R2, and I don't even know if my computer works well or not, because it was so slow. So, if anyone finds a solution, that would be great, but until then I'm sticking to XP.
00diabolic
{censored}.. I read this post yesturday & thought I had a different issue then you guys. I was using geekbench to do some testing between Vista, 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 and found 10.5.2 was the slowest and I could not figure out why. Geekbench does not tell you what your HD is transfering at but having it slow does affect your results. See my post about slow 10.5.2 results if you care. I had never had a slow boot up though like you guys until today. Today on battery i booted up and it took like freakin 8 mins on my laptop. I definitely have the same problem and its because of one of the ATA drivers on kalyway 10.5.2. My xbench score is 67.37 and my disk test are in the 70's and low 80's for the most part. So now that I have a good idea whats causing this. Who wants to fix it? This is what we need to do. Go and reinstall your systems this time making changes to anything that installs a IDE, SATA, ATA driver. Try one you never tried before. In kalyway 10.5.2 it warns do not unselect all of the drivers in that section. Whatever driver is in 10.5.1 works for me and I intend to find it and use that one. Hope that helps you guys. Let me know what you come across. I know a lot of you are on desktops and I'm on a laptop but hopefully we can figure this out.

zarac
you all guys probably suffer from the same problem: chipset driver usually if osx installation takes longer than 30-35 minutes it means generic ata driver is loaded. you can check what kext is loaded when booting with verbose switch (-v). look for the long line that starts with "Boot Device Detected..." whatever kext is mentioned in that line takes care of your drive. if it says AppleGenericATA.kext you're bound for really low disk transfers. on my old amd machine install alone took over 90 minutes with that kext. it turned out i needed AppleVIAATA.kext with my device/vendor id inserted in it. you can help yourself by checking your motherboard chipset (cpu-z in windows) and finding the appropriate kext for it. if you're not running windows, you can use DPCIManager in osx which will display a complete list of devices in your system with their vendor and device id's. on this site you can find what hardware is behind those vendor/device codes and identify your chipset. hope this helps a bit.
