MrRoper
Dont forget to backup... To replace the kernel: put the mach kernel on the desktop. rename the file to mach_kernel open terminal and type the following: sudo -s cp -R ~/desktop/mach_kernel /mach_kernel diskutil repairpermissions / exit reboot your machine Could you explain to me the steps you did in installing the new kernel? Because I tried replacing mach_kernel with the new one, but when I boot my PC it still loads my original kernel somehow and I'm not sure how to install the new kernel. shamrock73
Thanks, but I had just got it working shortly before you posted, but thanks for your help anyways. Hi, I've got exactly same problem, and I've got IATKOS as well Could you please explain me which solution did you choose to solve this annoying problem? thanks! prazvt
I know this is an old thread, but I just had the same problem once I used the netkas 9.2.0 update. My USB devices wouldn't get recognized unless the computer was booted with them in. My solution was to login to the irc chat (address on netkas page..i forget it), and download the 9.1.0 kernel posted there. It's called mach_toh. I just replaced the mach_kernel from 9.2.0 with that one and renamed it. I rebooted and voila, USB is back again. Anyway, I'm new to this and it was a leap of faith that i wouldn't hose the system by doing it that way. But it seems to be OK and usb is back again. Hope that helps! westwaerts
have you tried to disable usb legacy support in bios. seems osx doesnt like it at all. prazvt
No, usb legacy support is on at the moment. Is that why the USB went haywire after the 9.2 kernel update? I can try it at some point..but honestly, everything seems to be working on 9.1 for me (shutdown/reboot/usb/video/disc burning/audio/wireless, etc.) so unless it's necessary I probably won't mess with it for a bit. About the only thing I can't get to work right is Time machine. I have a 60gb 7200rpm usb hdd that mounts fine and I can use it. But I get a 'backup delayed' error whenever time machine wants to back something up. I suppose I should have partitioned the 250gb disk I'm using for os x when I installed ...but too lazy to do it now. Anyway that's another issue I suppose But ok...usb legacy support. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/87584-usb-problems-after-1052-update/page/2/#findComment-672146 Share on other sites

At first i tried with macnub AppleSMBIOS.kext (it didn't work at all), then with netkas AppleSMBIOS (able to get usb partially working, need to replace AppleSMBIOS at every boot with an Applescript script), then with 9.2.0 kernel (same situation above). Now 9.1.0 kernel fix it completely. sillybilly
Actually I have slightly different prob, but think it does not deserve a separate topic. The USB is working PARTIALLY. Regardless of the kernel update. (Was Kalyway 10.5.1 then his 10.5.2 update plus kernel update plus Apple's graphic core update). I have ICH8R, 10 ports, one of them attached to internal cardreader. During installation, all 10 ports were adopted ok. Then, after some reboots, -v said "Cannot take ownership of EHCI device <...ID...>" and the reader disappeared along with neighboring port. The keyboard and monitor hubs are ok (i use Cinema HD 23 and aluminium apple kybd) and everything I plug in is behaving properly. I tried disabling "BIOS EHCI Handoff" in BIOS (Asus P5B-E Plus) but then system hangs securely during boot. Maybe I need some EHCI driver option change? so it can properly take over those USB devices? I don't want to disable Legacy USB support in BIOS, since my keyboard won't work for the boot menu... kristouf
Installation of new 9.2.0 kernel from Netkas site did the favour and now I can get my USB devices to work simultaneously with Leopard. Same for me: I had the same issue, the USB was working for my keyboard and mouse but my iphone and ipod were not working. After several things as suggested here (disable legacy, update the file IOUSBFamily.kext. etc..) it was not working. As I have an old AMD CPU with no SSE3, I was using kernel 9.0.0 (Zephyroth 10.5.2 rev 1 DVD) After the kernel update from http://netkas.org/ to 9.2.0, the USB is now working!!! If it could help you KrisT@uF Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/87584-usb-problems-after-1052-update/page/2/#findComment-673495 Share on other sites
prazvt
So looks like it's kind of hit or miss whether netkas' 9.2.0 kernel update helps or hurts. Well, as long as there's a way to go back to a working kernel, doesn't hurt to try stuff. Speaking of USB (sorry I know this is offtopic despite my segway lol), I can't get timemachine to work with a usb hdd - is that a limitation of time machine? I have OS x installed on a 250gb disk but it's not partitioned into multiple drives. seye
No, still no USB. I installed the newest netkas kernel but it didn't help :-( I also noticed that when I plug in a USB drive before booting my PS/2 Keyboard and trackpad are not working. The drive is recognized but I cannot open it because I'm not able to move the mouse pointer. mrogers
I'm having these same issues and it's driving me nuts because it's the last remaining problem with my OSx86 installation. I started with the vanilla kernel installed via the kalyway_10.5.2_kernels package. The issues I'm having all revolve around USB storage devices. No problems with keyboard, mouse, printer, etc. Only USB mass storage. If I plug my camera in directly, it sometimes works. If I pull the card from the camera and put it in my card reader (what I prefer to do), it rarely works. It will mount the SD card on the desktop, but then I can't browse it -- Finder just sits there and spins. Or, I can browse it, but can't open anything from it. Then, when I go to eject it, it sits there on the desktop for at least another 3-4 minutes before reporting that it can't eject the disk because it's in use (it's not, really), or until I just pull the card. Note: occasionally it won't mount at all, and a sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/caches always fixes this, but still doesn't allow me to read the card. I have tried vanilla 9.2 and netkas 9.2 kernels. I have disabled legacy USB in the BIOS. I have switched USB ports. I don't understand why I can't get this to work. Should I try the 9.1 kernel? Am I risking anything by doing so? Any other suggestions? This is driving me up the wall... EDIT: I tried getting the new AppleSMBios.kext, nothing changed. I went ahead and gave the 9.1 kernel a shot...and my system wouldn't boot. Well, it sounded like it booted, but my monitors never fired up after the initial gray Apple logo. I had to boot with the Kalyway DVD and restore the 9.2 kernel from my backup. Any other ideas? I think I've hit them all in this thread and I still don't have USB mass storage working reliably. sillybilly
Hey, try setting USB to "fullspeed" (1.1) in BIOS! Everything's working fine for me, and OSX sets the proper speed upon boot, disregarding BIOS setting. 10.5.2 Kalyway here. prazvt
Well that sounds promising. My kernel version is apparently "Darwin 9.2.2" and my usb devices are still working fine. The only puzzling thing is that I don't remember updating the kernel again after going back to 9.1... may have been an OS X update? My USB set at the default 2.0 but again every machine is different!
