I am posting this topic because I am owner of a Dell Latitude D820 and through alot of searching have found that the D820 has not been well documented. Today, I successfully installed Leopard on the D820.

Hardware Status & Issues:

Original wireless (Dell Truemobile 3945) not working (bought a Dell Truemobile 1490 on ebay and it works out of the box)

Wired ethernet: not working (Broadcom Gigabit intergrated controller)

Graphics: Fantastic with Titan driver (installed during setup).

Audio (Sigmatel HD Audio): Not working, see reply post by kd4.

Touchpad & Keyboard: work perfectly.

Software needed:

iAtkos v1.0i (Mac OS X 10.5.1)

G-Pared Live CD

Installation Instructions:

1. Turn on computer

2. When BIOS flashes, hit F12 to enter Boot Menu.

3. Open CD/DVD Drive

4. Insert iAtkos v.10i CD

5. Select boot from Internal CD/DVD Drive.

6. When prompted, press any key to boot to installer.

7. Wait a few minutes...be patient!

8. When installer loads, select "OK" to continue.

9. Go to Utilities>Disk Utility

10. Create/format disk so there is one partition using Extended (Journaled).

11. After formatting, exit Disk Utitility, then installer quit installer, & reboot.

12. Hit F12 when BIOS flashes to access Boot Menu.

13. Insert G-Parted Live CD.

14. Select the GParted Live (auto-configuration) option

15. You will be prompted to hit enter twice for default options.

16. When prompted, enter "nv" for nVidia graphics card.

17. Select your preferred resolution..it doesnt really matter.

18. Right click on the partition you created, select "Manage Flags"

19. Select the "Boot" flag option.

20. Exit GParted Live.

21. Reboot

22. Access boot menu again (F12 in BIOS)

23. Insert iATKOS DVD and select boot to CD/DVD.

24. Wait for installer to load.

25. Select OK to continue.

26. Go to Utitlies> Darwin_Boot

27. Enter HDD Number (enter "1" if you only have one hard drive)

28. Enter partition number (enter "1" if you only have one partition)

29. Select "Y" for yes to install EFI Emulation

30. Select "Y" to say you're sure!

31. When process completes, exit Darwin_Boot.

32. Go back to installation..

26. Select the location of your installation.

27. Go to Customize.

28. Select the following selections:

a. Main system

b. Additional Patches> EFI Emulation (all sub-options)

c. VGA> nVidia> Titan driver

29. Click Install

30. Wait! Be patient! Progress bar will freeze and then sprint ahead, it should take about 20 minutes.

31. When install completes, system will reboot.

32. Enjoy your Hackintosh!

Common problems:

1. Installer reboots before installation completes.

~I experienced this many times when I was installing different options. I found that it really has no effect. Every installation was normal and ran cleanly.

2. Multi-lingual error message during boot of OS.

~This is a kernel panic. The installation was probably corrupt or one of the drivers you installed is corrupt. Try re-installing again with different driver selections.

Legal issues:

As you are aware, downloading and installing hacked versions of the Mac OS X are illegal and has serious legal consequences if prosecuted. I purposely did not include how I obtained above-mentioned software, so do not ask me.

Thanks for the stepwise install instructions--they worked for me (mostly). My D820 is having some sort of strange mouse/video error, though. The mouse keeps stopping mid-track, often accompanied by freezes in any animations (bouncing icons, etc.). A few seconds later the cursor will jump a short distance away in an attempt to finish the mouse maneuver. This process continues until the user waits for at least 1 minute--then you can move the mouse for 1-4 seconds without trouble. This has happened every time the OS runs, including during first-run registration and "welcome" animations (frustrating!!).

One more odd thing--if you let the computer go into standby, the problem clears up when you bring it back.

Did I mention that this is an otherwise-normal Dell Latitude D820? "Normal"--as in "factory defaults on everything". I'd love to hear any comments or suggestions about this...

This is most likely caused by both CPUS being active. I have a D820 as well, and I have had to either disable the second core in the bios, or use the cpus=1 during the startup

jamesmccain,

I tried updating my computer to the latest release of Leopard and it gave me a kernel panic during reboot. When I tried installing Leopard, I experimented with installing w/o EFI and the computer would not boot to the OS. Perhaps other uses have fixes for this. I would love to update to the newest release.

Red, uhh that sucks I was going to try w/o EFI and see if that worked but I guess not... have you tired to do the Kalyway 10.5.1 at all? w/ and w/o EFI? or updating?

James,

I have only done the iAtkos. If you try the Kalyway, let me know if it is successful. I am starting to find little bugs in the iAtkos:

1. I can't bring the computer out of standby. (I am only running 1 cpu)

2. The computer doesn't shut down all the way. The OS shuts down, but I need to physically power off the laptop.

I am using Kalyway 10.5.2. I am having the same sound issues that have been previously posted along with the network issues. I am new to both the Mac and trying this particular method, but I have been using a PC for at least a couple of decades. I am still quite confused around what I need to do to get the sound working, and I haven't seen anyone that's gotten the networking working. (I don't want to go out and get another NIC just for this experiment.)

What am I missing? The referenced post for getting the audio working says that the forum has moved and points me to the home page. I tried searching on D820, Latitude sound, and D820 sound; all with "no results found" for my return.

What do I need to grab to get the sound working on the 820, where do I need to put it, and will it persist once I place it there?

Thanks, all!

-Hatfira

ok the sound is the easy bit for the d820, the 2 files you need are appleHDAPatcher_v1.12 and also the file stac9200-b.txt found here

psykopat.free.fr/apple/AppleHDA/sigmatel/

do a search for the applehdapatcher when you have both extract the patcher to desktop and then move the txt file onto the frog icon. and sound will install.

im still struggling with my LAN braodcom 57x (poss BCM5752) i dont have windows on it anymore so unable to get device codes. has any1 sucsseded with getting LAN on a dell d820

I have been looking around since I started this project and it seems like everyone is considering the LAN support a lost cause. I dont understand what makes the broadcom LAN cards so complex. Perhaps it is the motherboard in the D820's. Hopefully somebody will figure it out soon!

This maybe too late for some, but i got my onboard nic working with the dell d820 a while now. I cant remember what i did exactly. I can share whatever files u may need.

Did you ever figure out how you got the nic to work on the d820? Do you still have those files?

Used VoodooHDA.kext for sound - all input / outputs work + headphones they way it should.

After 4 nights of wrestling: System's own linux dump (via Knoppix) + Taruga's AppleHDAPatcher v1.12-1.20; Dell Post Installer; Using everyone else Simgatel linux dumps; Azalia Audio; and changing DevIDs in IOPCIMatch.... VoodooHDA did it.

I know others have had sucess w/ the other methods, just add VoodooHDA.kext as a possible solutions cause it worked for this system (Dell Latitude D820).
