Hi all, i've been browsing these forums for while but this is my first post,

I'm very interested in building an dual boot OSx86 system, but there are just a couple of things i need to know before i get started. Firstly, how stable is the OS on an x86 platform? I gather that this depends on the hardware but is it possible to get a system working perfectly? As well as it would if it were on the PowerPC hardware?

I found this excellent howto at http://osx86.theplaceforitall.com/howto/ and I was wondering whether this would provide a perfectly working system, crash free and able to run all compatible software including professional and resource hungry graphics apps.

Right now i'm at odds to whether I should buy/build a system with mac hardware, or run osx on a PC. Performance wise am I right in thinking that a good installation of OSx86 will run better because of the increased processing power? Or will hardware issues hold it back to sub G5 performance?

Does anyone have any experience/advice about how this setup run:

ASRock 775Dual-915GL Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Pentium 4 630 3 Ghz Socket 775 800Mhz 2mb

2gb RAM

120gb SATA HD

NEC 3550a DVD-RW

Usb graphics tablet

I dont mean to be fastidious, but I'd rather be safe than sorry when making an investment like this, and I'm sure someone here will have had some valuable experience with these components.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

When you mention that you want to run "including professional and resource hungry graphics apps.", I directly lean to tell you to buy a mac. This I say because if you buy a PC with HW that is perfect for say, 10.4.3, once we get 10.4.5, or 10.4.4 working, you might realize that apple broke compability on some of your hardware. You have to remember that they WANT you do have this working.

IF you where to use OSX86 for "serious" work instead of just toying around (not to say I don't do serious work on my osx86 machine, just want you to think twice here), you must find some hardware that uses ONLY opensource drivers for all it's hardware... and that's not possible currently.

Hope this gives some insight

yeah, if you're doing heavy Photoshop work, then even if you could get OSX working 100% then you're still running through Rosetta until Adobe release CS3. So I wouldn't recommend it for serious intensive graphic work - not yet anyhow. Either buy a Mac or stick with Windows.

Of course, over the course of the year this situation will probably change - as drivers are written/hacked etc. But I personally wouldn't use osx86 for any work stuff.

Even if you do use Photoshop CS2 intensively, DO NOT buy Apple computer at this stage. The software that has been released under unibin is still limited, not to mention the scarce availability of Pro application for the new platform. Those reasons won't utilize your Mac system to its full performance.

So my suggestion is wait for another 6 months until a good number of unibin application is available and at the same price, you can get a better hardware.
