Installed Leopard: WORKING with nForce chipset (HOWTO)

I spent 2 weeks messing with this. I finally got a working install late tonight!

The biggest problem was injecting the updated nForce drivers onto my install DVD (Zeph. Leopard). Here's some info (IN SIMPLE PLAIN AND CORRECT ENGLISH) on how I did it...

1) Found the update nforce.kexts written by medevil

2) Deleted AppleNForce.kext from Extensions.mkext (using mkextcache method) & rebuilt Extensions.mkext database

3) WHEN USING LEOPARD YOU MUST PUT THE UPDATED NFORCE DRIVERS IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATION ON YOUR INSTALL DVD: /System/Library/Extensions/IOATAFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ (THIS IS WHAT HELD ME UP THE LONGEST! WHEN INSTALLING LEOPARD THIS MUST BE THE *ONLY* PATH WITH THE UPDATED nForce kexts)

-Use ULTRAiso on Windows to make your ISO image for editing. I could not *EVER* make a proper ISO with any of my Mac software (Toast, Disk Util, FastISO, etc)

-Use TransMac on windows to 'inject' the Extensions.mkext (after you remove AppleNForce.kext & rebuild database)

-Use TransMac on windows to 'inject' the AppleNForce.kext to the /System/Library/Extensions/IOATAFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins

-Once I injected the proper kexts, the install properly detected my SATA drives, and I could use diskutil to format/partition correctly

-Once the install was done, I had to inject the updated nForce.kext into my root filesystem [/system/Library/Extensions/IOATAFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins] using terminal off the install-dvd

-I also had an issue with the PATA controller using the nForce updated kexts. I deleted all the DEV ID's from the 'Info.plist' file under the 'PATA' section, and used the 'Generic' Apple PATA kext with no issues.

hope this helps someone!!!

Thanks, bookmarked for when i decide to install on my 680i EVGA. (Now i only need SLi working and X-FI sound card drivers). Besides the problems you ran into, did the install go good? was it smooth sailing in leopard? thanks again.

No problems installing whatsoever!

Getting my hardware to work post-install was a matter of finding an old 3com PCI ethernet card I had laying around, and installing my sound drivers. I used nvinject also to get my video working correctly...

I have an SLI motherboard, but don't plan to use its features with OS X (I haven't checked to see if I even could). I still have my vista drive for gaming, and will be using my SLI-featureset in Vista Exclusively, (for now atleast hehe)

how did you delete the applenforce and rebuilt the extentions.mkext

"WHEN USING LEOPARD YOU MUST PUT THE UPDATED NFORCE DRIVERS IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATION ON YOUR INSTALL DVD: /System/Library/Extensions/IOATAFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ (THIS IS WHAT HELD ME UP THE LONGEST! EDIT: so this will solve the issue with Erasing SATA HDD?

I'm still confused on all of this. With Ultra ISO my directory structure is completely different that with transmac, and in both cases i cant browse the system folder. The only two programs that load the dvd with the proper structure are MagicISO and ISObuster, unfortunatelly MagicISO seems to strip the image of its bootable nature and wont work and ISObuster is just for ripping ISOs.Can someone provide a step by step guide for how to work with ultraISO and transmac. The other injecting guide posted here doesnt seem to be for the leopard discs so wasnt of much help.nevermind got transmac to work by selecting "Show hidden files" from the menu. Not sure what you guys neeed ultra iso for.

  • 2 weeks later...

@homb0ne- ya I got the same problem... It hangs on creating partition map.

Although instead of manually recreating the extensions.mkext I just booted with-f. Idk if this would make a difference

Edit- after reboot it begins partition/ format but then hangs at about a half centimeter.
