kimchee411
Hi everyone, I just ordered a Mac Mini, but am considering swapping for a beefier homebrew box for a cheaper, faster, more flexible OS X system -- with the compatibility list here as a guide to which components to purchase =). I would just like to know if you are happy with your systems or if you would prefer moving to Apple hardware if you had a choice. It's been difficult to find out about compatability issues and performance relative to genuine Apple hardware. I know it may take some work to get some hardware working, but once running, has it caused other intermittent problems, i.e. crashing apps/OS? Has performance and stability been smooth sailing, particularly 3D and video? How about Parallels and/or Fusion? Thanks! mtotho
A number of ppl, including myself, have gotten multiple builds working 100 percent.. no glitches (check my sig) my bechmarks are three times as good as my dad iMac (he bought last year). The hardest part you will find is setting up the partitions.. the installing is the easy part. Once i got leo installed.. there was no problems.. if you get a compatible mobo you should not need to do any patching. Yea.. getting a dual boot set up was definately most difficult for me.. but that was only cause Installing vista and xp was not being very cooperative. I have not been running for that long.. but as far as i know.. for the most part all programs are very cooperative.. I think the most troublesome programs may even be Parallels and Time machine (time machine being more uncooperative) but both very easily fixed. There is also some issues with 4gb of ram in dual channel.. but that is easily avoided. flare389
My hackintosh has been running probably better than when I was using Vista on the same machine. The initial process of setting it up is tedious but once you get it to work its very stable. mtotho
Well.. it was actually easier for me to install osx than vista. Vista was a pain in the ass for me. i had to redo it about 10x.. even now there is something wrong with the install.. its all slow and crappy. I just use it for the Vista bootloader and boot mainly into xp and leopard. ANd even a perfect vista install is definately not as fast my leopard. Leopard is definately a quick operating system. Despite its few drawbacks.. speed and effieciency.. even on a pc is not an issue with leopard. kimchee411
Awesome! I'm so excited now! WAY more power and expansion capability for less $$$! So here's a rough draft of my rig: - Intel Q6600 Quad - Some highly compatible mobo - 4 GB G.Skill Dual-Channel DDR2 800 - Geforce 6600GT running dual head (1 DVI, 1 VGA) - 2x74GB U320 SCSI in RAID 1 mirror (already have drives) - Some suitable RAID controller, probably Adaptec. - 500W Cooler Master PSU (already have) - Maybe another WD Raptor 74GB since I'll be triple booting Linux and WinXP 32-bit using GRUB as the bootloader. I'd also like to play with Vista using Fusion. Any forseeable troubles here? Hexidecimal
I've been using various builds for the past couple of years on several different PCs. Right now I have Zeyph's 10.5.1 on my AMD rig, it runs fairly stable, Quicktime doesn't work, but I use VLC so I don't really care, iTunes crashes ocassionally, but I don't really use that machine for music either so it doesn't really effect me. I'm buying a laptop specifically for work that will run leopard natively, I'm over all very satisfied and will probably always have at least 1 system in my possession running OSx86. Even after I finally cave in and buy the MacBook Pro I want so desperately. AppleSlave
OSX_X86 has sucked for me to be truthfully honest. I installed iATKOS 1.0i on my Dell E1405. Audio doesn't work, NIC cuts out every 2 hours, mouse constantly freezes, and it only runs 1 core. I installed X86 to see what Leopard was like, needless to say I was sold, 2 days ago I ordered a Mac Pro with a 30" Apple Cinema Display. I could not be happier, props to OSX X86 team for making it happen, had it not been for me installing OSX X86 I would've never ordered a Mac Pro. I would've never known what I have been missing all this time using Vista. My E1405 will soon be formatted and will be back to running Windows and Ubuntu.
