Thaddeus Smith
I'm an IT guy that has a 17" MBP. I rarely need to connect to people's machines for support tasks (n00bs job) but sometime's it happens. I have vmware running so I can run my gotoassist client, but it seems such a waste of 20GB just for one windows app. Are there any similar applications out there that run natively in OS X and can support at least Windows, if not Windows and Apple platforms? This is different than RDC ..i have CoRD for that. I'm talking about multi-network, multi-platform support across the net. free is nice, un-free is ok, huge monthly service fees aren't really feasible. What you're looking for is called "VNC": http://realvnc.com <-- the original http://tightvnc.com <-- a speedier version that I personally prefer http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/ <-- Chicken of the VNC (MAC port) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/83203-multi-os-remote-desktop-sharing/#findComment-591054 Share on other sites
Thaddeus Smith
i'm well aware of VNC and no, it's not what I'm looking for. I need a utility that is easily downloaded and installed by even the most computer illiterate user and doesn't require punching holes in firewalls, etc. this is for user support purposes, not administrative remote desktop work. hecker
The VNC client is actually very easy to install. There's a limit on how illiterate a computer user should be, you know Besides, do you seriously think that you'll find an app that can just slide it's way through a firewall? Think again. Both of these provide a web-centralized access point for connecting the two machines together. https://secure.logmeinrescue.com/HelpDesk/Home.aspx http://www.gotoassist.com/ Neither supports running the "tech console" natively on my MBP, and only logmein rescue supports the end user running OS X. We currently use go to assist, but it has zero support for mac. Logmein is retardedly expensive and still doesn't fix my issue of wanting to do away with using vmware for one app. I thought i explained my needs pretty clearly in the original post; hopefully this additional info helps clarify. **edit: i also don't disagree with you; there should be a limit on computer illiteracy. unfortuanately I don't get to choose who is hired by the clients I support.
