haha, well can you really blame them? many of their customers ARE criminals, as with pc users. Are people really paying for logic pro or just downloading torrents of it? They want your original dvd of logic audio for the cross grade. sounds fair to me - you get it back in the form of the new version plus a new dongle (dongles suck).

mmm, there is no dongle for express. yet.

My point is, though i think it exemplifies the growing distrust for consumers, that apple, under law can force people to use a dongle. fine. as they have with logic pro. these customers don't need to send their dvd's back to apple.

why?

because apple knows that because of the dongle they can only use it on one computer in their house at a time. as per the shoddy licensing.

for logic express however, they are forcing customers to give up their dvd's in a fairly blatent assertion that 'if we don't make you, you'll break your license, we know you will, so taking back what you've already bought'

in this day and age no one owns anything except corporations.

whew, how left wing do i feel! anarchy! bring on the anarchy!

Well, you don't own the software anyway. You only pay for license to use it.

Maybe Apple could ask for a different form of proof of purchase, perhaps, but I think sending discs to the company to get a crossgrade sounds like a viable strategy. I don't get why melchior's getting all worked up about it. You're not forced to send in the discs if you don't want to do a crossgrade.

You'll not be breaking license if you don't crossgrade. There are literally millions of PPC Macs running for years to come that may just choose to use the PPC-only binary. I don't see anywhere on Apple's site that not doing crossgrade will invalidate your license.

To me, the very idea of 'crossgrade', well, sounds like exchanging the current discs for the newer discs. 'Growing distrust'? I'm not even sure if this is a modern practice. I thought I did something like this with another company's software at least a decade ago. Something like trading floppies for CD version, something like that.

yes, and dongle protection has been around for more than 20 years (amigas and ataris anyone?). This isn't new, and as you cleverly pointed out, we only pay for a license to use software owned by Apple.

either way, it's not a big deal - you don't need the dvd to run the software, and if you're smart you'll copy it first for achival purposes (like if your install dies while you're waiting for your new crossgrade to arrive in the mail).

They're releasing the crossgrade as an entire installation package, complete with new dongle et al, for $50 or whatever. So that's a hell of a steal for someone to buy it only to try and crack it. They want to make this take as long as possible for people to crack so legit customers will pay for it.

Hell, I'm even considering buying it now... Apple's starting to cost me a hell of a lot of money for my new intel mac fetish! (20" imac, edirol fa-66 pro-audio firewire interface, usb keyboard, motherboard, sata drive, dvd writer, what's next? buying logic pro audio??)

Don't worry. It's just my left wing pinko i-would-be-a-socialist-if-i-knew-what-one-was ideas on intellectual property and copyright and the purposes of such concept to encourage innovation and encourage them to market.

As we have all said, you don't own anything in this life and some people just don't like that...
