archer75
In finder, what i'd like to do is make it so when looking inside my pictures and video folders it's always in icon mode. And then in any other folder I want it in list mode. I can make it do it manually but is there a way to have set that way permanently? Permanent view preferences for different folders? hecker
Sure, you go to view options menu and enable the "always display as..." checkbox.
archer75
That doesn't entirely work. I leave the folder and my list view is now super huge icons. I change those folders back to list and set to display always as. Then I go back in to my pictures and now they are in icon mode. Then back out and i'm greeted, not by a list as expected, but super huge icons of my folders again. And it seems the only way to make a picture folder display those pictures as icons is to go to each folder, one by one, and set it that way. That's going to take an eternity. If I save a folder's view options these stick no matter what. The only thing I have noticed is that if you use the arrow navigation buttons (the ones in the upper left quadrant) to change folders, then all of the folder contents withing the navigation path will be displayed in the same manner as the initial one. So if I would say, set my pictures folders to "icon view" (you can also fully customize the icon size, by the way) and then navigate with the arrows, all of the other folders will be displayed as icons. Yes, that's exactly what happens. You did reproduce it. I don't know how else to navigate in and out of folders without using the arrow buttons so i'm stuck with folders not displaying as I originally set them. (scroll down about 3/4's of the page) The only solution is to get Pathfinder or something, but that costs money.

hecker
The way I do it is by displaying the entire file path in the bottom section of the window. That way you can always go up in the hierarchy. To dive into a folder I simply double click the target folder in the list. Never really felt like it was inconvenience. EDIT: Just to make things clear: each folder will be correctly displayed according to it's own view settings using this method.

hecker
Thanks hecker, I'd forgotten about that. Awesome! I know! The new Finder is one of the main things I was looking forward to in Leopard and I'm very happy with the new features. Especially the Cover Flow option.
