[HowTo] Boot from RAID 0-Drive on RAID-Controller (Bad Axe 2, may work with other Mobo's as well...)

@kingskawn

sorry for the delay - have been in the sates for a month :D

yes same issues here. the sil3132 driver is probably the reason for kp´s with 4gb. I switched off remapping and no more problems.

leo even recognizes 4gb (and is using it) although bios shows only 3gb.

what´s really weird now, is that bios shows only 2,6 gigs after I´ve installed a second graphics card - but leo keeps still on working with 4gb :D

One quick qestion.

If I buy the sil3132 and hook 2 x WD320GB, and format it to 640GB NTFS in RAID0. Will my Mac OsX and WindowsXP 64. Both sees it as 640GB drive and be able to use it both side? (Only use to storage Data, not for boot or anything)

<The problem I have now, not so important. You can skip this part if you already know the answer.>

I have Marvell Raid connect to two WD320GB in RAID0 now, and use Disk utility made it into Raid0 and when back to re-config to Raid0 in Bios. And since then, Mac see it as 1 640GB NTFS and Win see it as 1 drive with 4 partitions (200MB EFI system,297.77GB unknown Partition, 128 MB unknown, and finally 297.84 unallocated), I format the Unallocated area into NTFS. Copy over some data in it, I went back to Mac, still see the 640, but no data in it. Copy over some data in this side, too. and go back to win. Win did not see the data I copy over from Mac but still see the data I previously copy in it. Go back to Mac, see the data copy from Mac, but didn't see the data copy from Win still. This is wired, and sure caused by some corruption. So I looking to find a solution that made both drive to work in Raid0 beyound Bios or Diskutility. Maybe the Raid control card will do the trick.

P.S. I do know the NTFS-3G will slow down the Read/Write performance in Mac side. But I just want to have the bigger space in Mac side, and performance in Win side. And don't wanna buy another HD yet.

Thanks ahead.

my RAID0 done with two old disk 200 gb :)

Sorry to bring this thread back to life but if you boot into the dvd and load the kext for the sil3132 controller card, will you then be able to create 2 partitions on the created raid0 in GUID mode(one for osx and the other for windows) and dual boot off darwin after that?

So if I buy 8gb of ram for my hackintosh I can only use 3gb of it just to be sure the RAID will still work

No. The 4+GB problem is when you have Jmicron kext installed and use IDE mode for sata. Don't use Jmicron for raid. Use AHCI.

what you really shoud do it get the latest osx install dvd , make a command line backup of it (iso) using the dd command. then mount this iso readable and copy your raid controllers kext to the proper folders on the dvd(/system/library/extensions, I believe). Burn the iso to dvd and you now have an osx install that will see your raid. If you already setup your raid0 in its bios it should show up as the full 1 tb drive in osx now.

I went through all the problems you did as well until I tried this method, and I have never looked back.

i have made an .dmg file in disk utility and mounted it and tried to copy the .kext file for the 3132 into the extensions folder and it will not let me. Is there something I'm doing wrong when creating the image file that stops me from being able to add kext files? Thanks in advance.

did the same with a sil3132 controller - works awesome

only issue couldn´t do it with a guid disk - didn´t find a way to clone it bootable.

tried these: copycatx, carbon and superduper........no success

I've successfully have my raid 0 up and running, but whenever my machine goes to sleep they get ejected and my machine freezes. I'm using a Badaxe2, Highpoint 2640 raid card in a pcie slot with 10.5.6. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
