I used to have about 30GB of free space on my Hard Disk.

Then since I have tried to extract the img file I only have 19.4GB left.

While it was extracting (using WinRar) I could see the space going down: 30GB, 29.9GB, 29.8GB, etc. Maybe this was caused using the DD command in Windows but I definately got the PhysicalDrive number right.

So when I go into C: and select all the files and folders and click on properties, It says they total 85.2GB, My HDD is 120GB (114GB after NTFS) so I should have 28.8GB left, but it says only 19.4GB left when I right click on the C drive and click properties!

Any ideas?

Thanks

1st. One post per topic is more than enough

2nd. How big is the image file? Did you get the 6gb one or a larger one?

And if this is happening, why dont you use another method that dosent invole images?

After I extracted tiger-x86.tar.bz2, I got a folder which contained a 2.14GB image file.

Do you know whats causing the HDD space to go down?

I think it is when I extract the file with WinRar. Does WinRar take up temporary space? I have restarted and still no success!

Thanks

I hope yo uwere smart enough to turn on "show hidden files"

Yes I was.

The HDD space was going down, I had the mouse over C: and it was going down 30GB, 29.9GB ... 25.3GB, etc.

So do you knwo what is taking up this space?

Thanks

Were you DOWNLOADING anything with say, BitComet, or was Windows downloading any updates?

Do Disk Cleanup in system tools, you'll find ooldes of {censored}.

Yeh, Im hoping I dont have to format!

Please, anyone else with any ideas?

BTW, my extracted tiger-x86-flat.img file was 2.14GB.

Thanks

My archive extracted to a folder with various files in it worth 6.443.544.334 bytes, the tiger-x86-flat.img in that folder is 6.441.910.272 bytes.

How do I delete the swap file as it is over 10GB?

Thanks

If you use Norton Antivirus it has a nasty habit of keeping around files deleted. Nice incase a virus has a go at your system, annoying when you delete files often, example, temp files from extracting.

You can limit the size of the swap file. But I wouldn't advise deleting it. Removing the swap file completely is only acceptable on machines with an abundance of RAM (1GB min, 2GB+ rec), and no programs that require a swap file (eg. games).

NOTE: You will have to reboot when you are done, so don't try this while in the middle of something.

Heres how (but be careful):

Right click on "My Computer"

click properties

click the "Advanced" tab

in the "Perfomance" block click "Settings"

click the "Advanced" tab

in the "Virtual Memory" block click "Change"

Now that you are here, if you don't understand what this is, you should think twice about playing with it.

Usually the swap file is on the same partition as the windows install.

In the "Paging file size for the selected drive" block it shows your current swap file info.

If "System Managed Size" is selected, Select "Custom."

Set the "Initial Size" to twice the amount of physical RAM you have. (ie. if you have 512MB of RAM, set it to 1024) This is usually acceptable for anyone with less than 1GB of RAM.

Set the "Maximum Size" to something close to 3 times the amount of Physical RAM you have.

click the "Set" button

click the "OK" button 3 times to exit out completely. A window may pop tell you to reboot. Reboot whenever it tells you if it comes before you exit out completely.

If you have any questions let me know.

In the other case that this is already restricted to a specific size, you're gonna have to figure out what is eating your HDD.

I know how to do all of that.

Please read the start of this post.

While Extrracting with WinRAR, I lost 10GB of space.

10GB more sapce os said to be used in the properties of C: but when I select all my files, I am 10GB less. There is a pic to show this.

So, how do I get back my missing 10GB?

Thanks
