On the other hand, as I have a 60 Gb free space partition, if I installed XP on that partition, would i have problems booting my OSX again?

I do not know much about installing XP with OS X. But I would recommend that we get your OS X installation working first, before complicating it with XP.

Which pre-patched versions of 10.4.5 are you working with? Myzar's?

I think you should start from scratch. Use your 10.4.5 DVD to repartition your entire hardrive and reinstall OS X.

I am begining to suspect that this has something to do with your hard drive.

EDIT: I mean, I think almost everyone else here is running SATA not ATA.

What exactly are you working with? Do you have any others?

What are your BIOS settings? AHCI or IDE?

EDIT: I am know thinking could have something to do with the IDE bus being shared with your DVD drive and ATA harddrive. Is that how it is set up or are these devices on seperate buses? Is it possible that your "master/slave" jumpers are set wrong? What happens if you disconnect the DVD drive and try to boot?

Except that I read somewhere, that the Bless command in 10.4.4 for Intel was broken. Not that I know for sure, just recall reading it.

OK, I think know what you are talking about now. Myzar just posted something in my EFI thread that alludes to this: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?sh...ic=13493&st=27#

However, I would assume that the 10.4.1 Bless is being used on 10.4.4+ pre-patched installation disks.

I'm working with an ATA Maxtor 160 Gb. My bios settings are right, it's set in IDE and the jumpers are in the right place.

I've disconnected the DVD drive and the problem persists. I will probably have to do with the ATA system, although it seems very strange to me.

I'd like to ask two more questions. Firstly, how should i recover those 60 GB. of free space from Mac? With the Disk Utility i can't manage to do it. Secondly, I know our mobo does not support audio input, but is there any cheap usb adaptor that can make it?

Thanks a lot!!

I am not sure what you mean by "recover". It sounds like you have three partitions, the third being 60GB of unformated free space. If you want to format the free space and use it with OS X, Disk Utiltiy should work fine. What exactly do you want for paritions? Two for OS X and one for XP?

Again, I think you should start from scratch and repartion your entire hard drive (it doesn't sound like you did this yet).

In case anyone is thinking about buying a 9X0 series Pentium D in the near future, Intel is planning to cut prices on April 23:

Hi!

I've purchased your ADD2 card as well and it is on its way! :construction: I'm buying nextly a 20 inches Benq monitor, so i'm looking foward to receiving it.

Nevertheless, i have a problem i'd like to be helped out with. When i click on the display preferences from the System Preferences, i crashes and it closes the window.

Can you thing of where is the problem? The system is the same as yours, bofors.

Thanks!

Good find!

Then there is a good time to buy cpu in the end of this month, rather than wait for 4 months for Conroe. Then in a year from now, Intel will release quad cores which would probably be a solid upgrade from the cheap 9X0.

Got my DVI-D card today finally. Just finished installing it. The text is clearly crisper with this card compared to the regular VGA output in 1920 x 1200.

This is consistent with my observations as well, I noticed mild text blurriness on my VGA but not on my DVI display.

When i click on the display preferences from the System Preferences, i crashes and it closes the window.

I have never had that problem. What kind of monitor are using? Are all other display settings "normal", i.e. Beam Sych. is on automatic, resolution has not been set in some plist, etc.? Try looking in the Console.app for a crash log, so we can get a clue about what is going on.

It depends on your needs of course. But look at the dual core Merom/Conroe/Woodcrest chips as being a big deal and am not at all concerned about the quad cores that follow. It is more than just the number of cores stuck in a package that matters. The new architecture is really what matters and do to limitations on the front side bus speed, the quad cores are going to be somewhat restrained. Furthermore, like the Pentium D, the first quads cores that Intel releases will be two pieces of silicon not one, meaning that they have to use the front side bus to communicate.

While I may actually build more of these Pentium D boxes, I plan to get rid of my Pentium D hardware when Woodcrest (Xeon) chips and motherboards are availble this fall. I will then build dual Woodcrest boxes which I expect will be like the Intel PowerMac and Xserve.

Hanibal at Ars Technica has just released his report on the next generation Intel chips, it is worth looking at (although Hanibal usually goes into some rather irrelevant and arcane pipeline and scheduling details).

OK, that is the crash log I was looking for. However, I am not seeing anything particulaly interesting in it. The crash seems to occur when the Display preferences panel is loading some image.

Other than Startup Disk and Displays, do any other System Preferences panels crash for you?

Next, I wondering which version of the 950GMA driver you are using. You can check this by looking at the "Date Modified" field of AppleIntelIntegratedFrameBuffer.kext at /System/Library/Extensions. I believe that I am using the 10.4.4 version (version 1.4.20.28 in Get Info), which is dated January 3, 2006. Apparently there some problems with the 10.4.5 version (dated February 3, 2005, version 1.4.24.6) which might be the cause of your crash.

The panels that crash for me are: Security, Display, Keyboard and mouse, and sound.

Wow... you have a wild system.

Again, for the record the only System Preference that crashes for me is Startup Disk, and that is somewhat expected because it taps into Apple's EFI firmware which is not present on my machine.

Between this and your bizarre boot problem, I am wondering if your motherboard might be defective or something. Are there any problems in Windows?

What version of BIOS are you on?

Likewise, I have been up for about five days on Myzar's 10.4.5 and have had no system instability whatsoever. However, I want to give a few more weeks before I declare victory of my minor problems.

Still have had have absolutely no incidents of system instability with Myzar's 10.4.5, that's over two weeks of use. I ran my box under full load on both cores for almost 10 hours last night with no problem.

I have been to say something of printers for OS X. First of all, I hate ink jet printers as they are typically junk and expensive to run. Unless you are doing a lot of photography work, I would absolutely avoid them.

I have been using an HP LaserJet 1320 for the last year, at about $250 it is cheap to buy, toner cartridges are easy to refill so it is cheap to run, and it really kicks ass:

When choosing an laser printer for OS X, it is important to get one like the HP 1320 that supports PostScript.

I've finally reinstalled and everything works properly now!

Great, I glad your box is finally work right.

My HD is ATA if you remember, and this is my full benchmark with exactly your config. except for the 2Gb. of ram. Can you see anything strange?

Your Xbench score is a 104 that is about what I would expect. I did not noticing anything strange, is there something you are concerned about?

As we discussed before in this thread, some of the Xbench disk tests, in particular the 4k block random write, appear to be scaled wrong. We all get low scores there, SATA or not.

If you feel like trying out 10.4.6, go for it. I would probably consider using JaS' upgrade: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=14193

Let us know how it goes.
