Okay so I'm thinking of getting a new computer, I've used os x on my mac for a while now, and am not sure whether I should get a new mac, or a custom pc, then run osx86. I was wondering how well it runs, like what sort of bugs should I expect, extra drivers to install, would I be able to auto update and that sort of thing? Maybe there's a part compatibility checker I could look at?

Thanks for any help.

Will

You can't auto update on an osx86 box without first figuring out if the update is safe first. This seems to apply to nearly every update, as people run like chickens with their heads cut off here every time there is an update.

Also, outside of the wiki, there is no compatibility checker (and seriously, there needs to be one).

It works really well! Stability is excellent, even better than windows! If you don't mind tinkering a bit you can update too.

Here's the link to the wiki HCL http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.4.8

I think building a computer and getting osx86 to work near to an exact copy of a real mac is a very good expirence to learn. But if you're not really to hardware or software familiar, you'd be in over your head. It is being made easier though. I remember starting off osx86, didn't know anything. This was about maybe 2 ago. I can install kexts, or modify some now to an extent. It is good to know though even if you aren't gonna stay on Osx86, so if you ever need to troubleshoot a mac you'll know some steps on how to do it.

In my opinion do what you best like in my case I love macs but they don't have what I want Nvidias 8800 , PCI ports, only few USB ports, I currently have 12 without hub, I got a really silent PC, logitech mice and keyboard so basically I love hackintoshes because you can have what you want and also I like to learn about customizing like editing kexts and stufs like that so to me my hackintosh is a funny way to learn about OSX.

So if you want to learn more about osx go hackintosh if you want the most flawless experience go real macs.

You summed it up pretty well, but for a real learning experience about whats happening 'under the hood' the benefits of a hackintosh can;t be underestimated. Its helped me enormously, I have earned money servicing real macs from what I have learned.

If however your not really interested and want everything to 'just work' all the time then get a real Mac. Personally I love my Hackint0sh
