LioNEXT
Hi. anyone had any success on the HP xw8400 workstation? 2xintel quad core (1.7Ghz) 4Gb ram, Nvidia Quadro FX 1500Would love to be able to run Final Cut Studio 2 on it... thnx I got this working in my office. I have xw8400 workstation but with one Xeon CPU 5130. We were using linux on it but now I installed os x for my office work as well. Everything seems to work except for network and audio. For network BCM5752 simply does not work. There are partial solutions out there but it causes kernel panics. Went ahead and bought $17 only Trendnet TEG-PCITXR Gigabit card and this is natively supported in mac - as in what apple uses. so everything works for me, shared volumes, bonjour, etc. Now if I could get audio to work as well with its ALC262. After installing the patch and correct dev ids, the output shows up in system preferences, but no sound? Other than that it is pretty good. laikom
What version of osx are you guys installing on the xw8400? I have the same computer and am thinking about giving it a shot too.
LioNEXT
What version of osx are you guys installing on the xw8400? I have the same computer and am thinking about giving it a shot too. Both iATKOS v1 and Kalyway 10.5.2 have worked for me well. Although because of data and all other mods, I have kept using the iATKOS version for about 8 months now. If you are just starting, try Kalyway. simply painless experience.
laikom
Awesome, i'll give it a shot and try to remember to report back with my success. Are you running FCP on your xw8400?
laikom
I have tried to get it going on my xw8400 with no luck. The install halts on "still waiting for root device" when I use my SATA dvd drive. Then i switch the DVD to the IDE dvd drive adn it loads, but no sata HDDs show up. I don't want to have to install on an IDE drive but maybe i have to... Do you have it installed on SATA or IDE? LioNEXT
I have tried to get it going on my xw8400 with no luck. I don't want to have to install on an IDE drive but maybe i have to... Do you have it installed on SATA or IDE? i could not get this to earlier. I have SATA HDD and DVD is on IDE. Use kalyway, it should work fine. I remember I also got that still waiting for root device. But I think I figured that in the BIOS, I had to change the storage drive controller to Individual IDE SATA controller (dont use RAID+AHCI). There were few other options that I tweaked, but dont remember right now. On the boot order option, choose sata device as first (press enter and drag using arrow keys and release). i hope that helps. laikom
I have gotten farther. I did what you suggested and changed my storage options, sata emulation to "seperate IDE controller". But now i get an error of not being able to complete installation right at the end. Something about itunes failing. There are some other options in the bios but i have not tried all of them yet. Do any of these ring a bell? OS power management, runtime power management, idle power savings, acpi s3 (support, hard disk reset, ps2 mouse wake up), ub wake on device insertion. Then there's hardware power management with Sata Power Savings. Any other ideas? BTW i'm trying Kalyway 10.5.
laikom
hey all, i have done it, here is what i've gotten so far. I can't figure out how to update the wiki so maybe someone else can post this info for all. • Install method: JaS OSx86 10.5.4 Client Server Intel SSE2 SSE3 • CPU: 2 x Dual Core Xeon 3.0ghz (model # 5160) both CPUs working, all 4 cores. (Recognized under profiler when use “Mac Pro” Smbios on JAS dvd) • Board: (?) xw8400 board • RAM: 4gb (4x1gb) All working at correct speed. • Audio: NOT WORKING • Video: 2 pciE cards in triple monitor mode Quadro FX3500 and Quadro FX1400 both working with QE and CI fully (used NVKUSH on JAS dvd) • LAN: NOT WORKING • SAS (serial attached scsi): system installed on this controller on a 15k rpm drive. • Optical Drive: IDE and SATA (under sas controller) working • SATA: NOT WORKING however, sata drives work on SAS controller • Firewire: working • USB: working • Keyboard/Mouse: HP usb mouse/keyboard working • Install notes: installed on MBR formatted drive. kernel – intel.. sleep, Chipset – SAS, Video – NVKUSH, network – NONE, sound – all, device ID – nvidia 6 + 7, SMBIOS – mac pro, cleanup. alphaquam
I have an HP xw4600 that will soon be coming home from the office. This thread has been a great help. I'll report back here with details in a few weeks.
laikom
My xw8400 is going great, with only one problem. I cannot get final cut pro to launch. It keeps unexpectedly closing after i click "ok" to it not finding a DV deck. Any suggestions of what to try? I am using FCS2 which worked find on my xw8200 with the leo4all disc install. It's not the audio which is the problem and all the hardware should be fine. I'm using an maudio USB audio controller. And avid media composer launches and runs great on this setup. I'm using the JAS 10.5.4 disc.
Formal
My XW8400 seems to be great with Kalyway 10.5.3. with Vanilla Kernel, BUT a few things :- 1. Only one 3.0GHz Dual core is showing ( I have two installed) But in the profiler it has three cores????? And the bus speed is 0??? 2. No network or sound (But thats fine as don't need either) 3. I am running a genuine Mac Pro 7300GT PCIe graphics card with QE running perfectly. 4. I am going to install my two Digidesign PT's HD PCI cards, anyone else done this yet in a XW8400??? Thanks
gawdemmet
I know this topic is a few months old. But I'd like to report that my xw8400 works ok with iPC 10.5.6 vanilla kernel / Chameleon. Even upgraded with Software Update to 10.5.7 without needing to borrow any old extensions from the previous 10.5.6 install. Deep sleep (hybernation) works fine also, something I had trouble with in the past with previous hackintoshes I had. Audio still does not work, even after using a linux codec dump off my system in conjunction with taruga's app yielded nothing. However I'm getting fine with a $3 usb audio plug. IcaRuS87
Hi there, We are actually just trying to install Mac OS X on a HP XW8400. The iDeneb 1.4 (10.5.6) didn't work, the Kalyway 10.5.2 did work however. Now that you say the iPC 10.5.6 works to, we are gonna try that release. Question for the last poster: Did you also set the SATA Emulation in the bios to: Seperate IDE controller? Or did you let it on: RAID+AHCI? And you choosed the Vanilla kernel? Question for the last poster: Did you also set the SATA Emulation in the bios to: Seperate IDE controller? Or did you let it on: RAID+AHCI? And you choosed the Vanilla kernel? iDeneb did not work for me either. I set the bios to handle the drives under separate IDE controllers because my setup has 4 drives each with a different OS. I don't think I could've gotten away with RAID+AHCI for multiple booting with GRUB (linux,win32,win64,osx). I don't know if it can work with RAID+AHCI. The drive is partitioned as GUID of course. I chose no kernels. Chose chameleon DSDT (no custom picture). I also chose AppleSMBIOSEFI.kext. I applied no DSDT patches. I chose no SAS chipset support, although Apple profiler correctly identifies it as LSI Logic. Not sure if it works to be honest as I have no SAS drives. The ethernet kext I used is AppleBCM5751Ethernet.kext and it's in /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/ I can't remember where I found it but I can provide it for you. I used no other patches. May have used seatbelt though. Can't remember.. Once the install finished I went ahead and downloaded the combo 10.5.7 upgrade from apple. I apologize but I did say I downloaded through Software Upgrade and that's no true. Either way, after the installer finished I went ahead and rebooted to much of my surprise without any problems whatsover Keep in mind that performance isn't in any way stellar. I'll post xbench/geekbench/cinebench scores later for this setup. The last core2duo imac I tested scored about %25 higher than this. Dunno if it matters but I have a quadro fx 3700 card (using nvdarwin 512).

gawdemmet
Heh. Believe it or not, this hp setup is working better that apple's own hardware. I have x2 8 core macs at work, both with their own quirk and problems. Yet the hp xw hw is giving me less lock ups / freezes, and far less erratic behaviors. I'm actually taking work home because of mac problems at work. I'm adding another quad core xeon 1.86ghz cpu to the system. I'll update benchmarks when I install that. gawdemmet
I spoke too soon. It doesn't like the second processor I added (Kernel Panic on boot). Neither Win, or Linux complains though. Possibly needs patching. The error says something along the lines of "expecting 2 cores, but got one instead" There's 8 core in there now, you dummy kernel! :

Otherwise it has never worked for me. Give it a try and see how it works!
