melvin
it says (for powerpc) under the 10.4.4 selection. Would that mean that all of the intel stuff is closed source.... even the kernel and the kexts? Yes, but since the kernel itself has already been open-sourced, the produced kernel images (ie. mach_kernel) can be assumed to be under the same free-distribution license. John the Geek
Instructions for entering EFI (including the EFI Shell) are here: http://nak.journalspace.com/?cmd=displayco...407&entryid=407 Interesting So since there is no shell on the Mac you can use the Intel example to basically "make one yourself." Sweet. EDIT: Also, EFI is still considered a "BIOS," just not a traditional BIOS.
anothermortal
Instructions for entering EFI (including the EFI Shell) are here: http://nak.journalspace.com/?cmd=displayco...407&entryid=407 Excellent. I'm so excited to see the progress people are making so far. By the time my MacBook Pro ships, I wonder how far along booting other OSes will be. John the Geek
I think the next step would be this: if the Mac is partitioned, and the first partition has Mac OS X, and the second partition has this Intel EFI test binary (blessed and all) does the system picker see both (Opt at boot)? If so, then an EFI binary built just to "jumpstart" Windows on another partition might be enough. Or launch an app that virtualizes a BIOS if needed for more than startup. Then we use the system picker to choose our OS at startup.
ibookster
how about making an ichat/AIM chatroom for installing windows on the new iMac? iChat users press apple+shift+g and write: windowsonimac That way we can swap info quickly - although crucial info still need to be posted in here just an idea

I know several Linux and BSD flavors use netbooting to install on machines that doesn't have proper framebuffer support for the traditional installers. dmdimon
Just posted in other thread: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?sh...0&gopid=44283 In short: The partition scheme is GUID Partition Table (GPT) You can boot only from-under GPT You have to take a closer look at original MacOS DVD - what partition is it? What info will toast show on it? I think THE WAY is to install 2003 server on external drive partitioned under GPT, than connect it to mac and try to boot with a) alt pressed or b ) quickly pressed F8 (boot options) or c) with disabled original drive. Oops! 32-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows XP 64-bit Edition (x64) cannot boot from GPT disks. From here: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/stora...UN_SP1.mspx#EYD And at last: http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServe...8a757a1033.mspx only this 3 can boot from GPT: Windows XP 64-bit Edition (Itanium) Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition for Itanium-based Systems Edited January 18, 2006 by dmdimon

It's ironic that you spend so much time with your new iMAC trying to boot Windows! Strange to see the "For evaluation purposes only" Off topic, I see you're a fan of NIN.
