laboy
Hello, I’m downloading lots of movies in DiVX or MPEG formats, when I burn CD’s and use my DVD (DiVX) player. Thinking to buy AppleTV, but I have to convert all my movies to iTunes format L Is there any way I can use AppleTV and play movies from my PC without converting files? Thank you! U.C.
Just buy a DivX DVD Player. They cost less than 100$ and play DivX, XVid and a lot of other formats.

Synaesthesia
Yes, you can install Perian onto your AppleTV, which is a Quicktime Component that lets you play just about any format, including DiVX. (it's a great program) How-To: play DivX and Xvid on your Apple TV It's a hack, but hey
StefanM
When i install Perian on the box, do i only need so sync my files from the pc via itunes to apple tv? Is it possible to sync xvid and divx files to apple tv via itunes? Do i only need to drag the files into movies on itunes?
Synaesthesia
I don't have an Apple TV, so I don't know. If you install Perian, you can play Xvids etc in itunes, so I think you can sync it via iTunes as well. (assuming you're using Mac OS X)

ottsk
I recently bought a used appletv for this very purpose. I download TV shows and whatever from usenet in xvid or divx format and play them on my appletv. works great. If you go to awkwardtv they step you thought the process of using a flashdrive to update your system with their goodies. Once flashed, you can enable ssh and file sharing, and download all the necessary extensions/codecs. It's super easy, assuming the box you get has the 1.0 firmware installed. I just mount my apple tv over a afp share on my desktop and drag and drop the videos into the Movies folder on my AppleTV. From across the house I transmit at about 2.7MB/sec from an old WRT54G, but that's about twice the speed I get my my Powerbook G4 from the same location. I tried to play some HD content the other day, and it was choppy. But that might have been because I was transfering it at the same time I was trying to view it. I wasn't very patient with it, so maybe it works, I don't know. I really like not having to burn discs. I just wish I could power it down without pulling out the plug. Mebster
Thank you! You could get a DVD Player which supports USB drives (I was thinking of getting one of them) or go with a XBMC (thinking of doing this instead now) Yes, you can install Perian onto your AppleTV, which is a Quicktime Component that lets you play just about any format, including DiVX. qw3rty
I'm thinking of getting this to play movies I have stored on a NAS.
David86
you dont need to transfer movies using ssh, you can just mount a network volume manually or use nito tv which gives an awesome interface.
