I am installing it using my hp pavillion dv5000 laptop. It can boot from the USB HDD option. Can anyone pls.help me on how the disk utility can recognize the HDD? It recognizes the internal SATA2 HDD so i dunno y it wont recognize the external HDD in the USB case... thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/66784-external-usb-hdd/ Share on other sites
MacChief
i'm not sure why that is you might try connecting the drive after the boot process is complete and see if it recognizes it disk utility should recognize it and let you partition it i had no issues installing JaS 10.4.8 on a USB HDD, but i could not get it to boot for some reason Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/66784-external-usb-hdd/#findComment-473597 Share on other sites
alisabki
maybe the disk utilities doesn't detect the partition u are using. is the partition is NTFS? or FAT32? ...//just my thought. sorry if im wrong Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/66784-external-usb-hdd/#findComment-473756 Share on other sites
richtig
There exist several different USB interface controllers for external USB hard drive enclosures. While some work OK, others may not, due to lack of OSX drivers. One other option would be: going to eSATA, instead of USB. ~pcwiz
If its a internal HD in an external enclosure then that might be a problem. Usually the USB HDDs you just buy fully assembled from the store work. If you get that working, you can use my USB HDD install guide: http://######.com/software/osxusbnative.htm Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/66784-external-usb-hdd/#findComment-473833 Share on other sites
.:' GiZmO ':.
Is there any usb hdd support option in your bios? try figuring that out... assabakie: Disk detection is not affected by the current condition. If the usb controller is supported, the disk is recognized no matter what.. Then it can be partitioned normally as it would in any other situation.. greatchinu
the external hard drive is assembled using a 160 gb sata HDD in an external casing(cause for problems)??? it is partitioned HFSJ and about partition it shouldn't matter bcoz disk utility should pick it right up... and yeah thr is a little confusion on how the drive boots coz smtimes the laptop will recognize the external USB and boot from it and smtimes not.guess thr's some "LAG". i will try inserting it after the OSX boots up ur right it shd show as any other USB drive. nice idea mate! i will post the results.
