Amazon Launches DRM-Free Music Store

Amazon just released the Public Beta of Amazon MP3 today. Their store currently has 2 million songs, compared to iTunes' 6 million. The one thing that could threaten Apple here is that all 2 million of those songs are DRM-free. Also, Amazon MP3's DRM-free songs are a mere $.99, the same as Apple's DRM songs. The DRM-free songs on the iTunes Music Store are $1.29, which is about 30% more. But to the average end user, many people assume that they will just buy an iPod and not even care if the songs have a DRM or not. Although every song is encoded at higher quality as an MP3 at 256 kilobits per second -- as high as Amazon's rival Wal-Mart and slightly behind the 256Kbps AAC files of iTunes Plus. This is one of the more serious threats to Apple's market share.

Please explain to me how that matters???

Thanks for the news numberz.

Yeah, you're right. Copying things from others is okay. Microsoft proved this to us all.

Here's some news for ya. Quick! Grab it before MacRumors does!!

:D

Oh, and Numberz, you put "%30" in your story, instead of "30%". Does the Pending Stories forum work anymore for you guys to review and edit the News before it goes live?

Dude, I see what you're saying but this site isn't geared up for news. We don't have the resources like others do. And so we gotta make the most of what we can. If that means pinching some news from other sites then so be it. Because otherwise we'd have no news. I for one don't go to those sites because I'm not that crazy about Apple news. I get what I get from here and BBC news.

So to me it really doesn't matter. And it isn't like they're not listing the source of the news. So the credits is going to where it's deserved. So to me at least all is fair.

PS: what's next to the word ONLY on the pink shuffle pics? On both of them the lights reflection is covering it.

What all do you need to get "geared up" to do the News? It was just Kevin_4e and I were doing it for a while there, and we seemed to post the latest news pretty frequently without copying it from MacRumors...

Maybe to you it's fine, but not really for the rest of us....

And it says "Only at Target" on the shuffle box...
