~pcwiz
Hi, My specs are below in my signature. I want to update from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10 and I have a copy of the PascalW Delta Updater. I am currently running Uphuck 1.4iR3 with the Semthex 8.8.1 kernel (from the JaS 10.4.8 disc) because the 8.9.1 kernel is unstable on my system. I have backed up my kernel and extensions. My system is known for being unstable with newer kernels so I'm wondering: If something screws up after installing the update, could I restore my kernel and extensions using single user mode? Anything else I should do before installing? Waiting for a thumbs up to install pcwiz Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64458-update-to-10410/ Share on other sites
blacknight
you have to be familiar with the command line in single user mode to do it. there is a software called MacDrive which let you access your osx partition inside windows you can use it to restore your kernel and extensions. ~pcwiz
OK I'll download MacDrive and then use Acronis True Image to make an image out of it. Then I'll run the PascalW Delta Updater and if something goes wrong I'll revert back by restoring the image. I'll let you know how it goes. ~pcwiz
OK I'm creating the image of my drive using True Image. I selected the backup option and I selected my USB HDD and now its backing up to a TIB image file. Its taking a pretty long time...I hope the image isn't as big as the drive (232GB) cause I won't even be able to fit that on my HDD. Its at 2 percent right now and its been going for about 5 minutes. Estimated time remaining is 2 hours.... Is this as it should be? ~pcwiz
I have a scary suspicion. What if the True Image program DOES create a 232GB sized image? I only have 66GB free on the Windows partition I'm backing up to (E:). Here is the info listed in Acronis as it is making the backup: Create Full Backup Archive From: Disk 2 To file: *E:\OS X backup.tib* Compression: Normal Operation 2 of 2 Creating partition image Hard Disk: 2 Drive Letter: H: Type: 0xAF (ShagOS swap) File system: None Size: 232.9GB **** Is this like its supposed to be? I'm just worried because under size it says 232.9GB. Thats the full size of my OS X USB drive. I'm only using 3GB of the space on the drive right now. I hope it doesn't create a 232GB backup file... Any thoughts? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64458-update-to-10410/#findComment-457292 Share on other sites
littlepr
PCWIZ why don't you use the disc utilty or get your hands on Carbon Copy Cloner http://software.bombich.com/ccc.htm Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64458-update-to-10410/#findComment-457297 Share on other sites
~pcwiz
I need a Windows utility because I'm backing up to my NTFS partition. I don't think it would make sense using a Mac utility because if something goes wrong after I update, I won't be able to access the backup. With Windows, I can boot into Windows and restore my backup.Oh yeah and the True Image is 80% done. Estimated time remaining 24 minutes.OK Its done and it worked fine. The image was created successfully and its 3.8GB in size, about right. I'll update to 10.4.10 tomorrow. ~pcwiz
I updated and it went pretty well Everything works in 10.4.10 but I still have to use the 8.8.1 kernel & System.kext. Like I said, any kernel higher than 8.8.1 is unstable. With the 8.10.1 kernel, it just loads the extensions and the machine reboots. Does anyone have any idea why my system can't run any kernel higher than 8.8.1?
