Hi there.

I am curious as to if there are any of you out there with experience in unlocked iPhone's ?

I am looking to buy one of e-bay and use it at home (in Europe). As far as I can tell, this is quite viable, but I am curious as to if all the features will work ? Mainly syncing and basic stuff like that.

Any inside info deeply appreciated :)

Recent rumors say that Apple might possible render your iPhone unusable and blacklist your serial from future support if you keep your iPhone unlocked when the new iPhone update comes out. So if you get one, you might want to relock it soon.

You don't have to update.

Mine works wonderfully on T-Mobile

Hey DarkLord, sorry to chime in, I don't mean to hijack but I reckon this is interesting for all European folks who want to unlock.

Which unlock method did you use and did your SMS work out of the box? Did you use a package that's supposed to work out of the box or did you hack some command lines into it?

FYI, I got mine unlocked and voice calls work with a Swisscom SIM but SMS is broken. The other issue, I've got no clue how to get to my voice mail. When I hit the icon nothing happens. From what I know on other mobiles, you normally have to define the voice mail centre of your operator which is your phone number preceded by a prefix. I can't find where to enter this :(

My experience so far is that the iphone is more like a posh ipod/media player with a tiny bit of mobile phone functionality.

For instance, don't expect your SIM contacts to be loaded automatically. The iphone can't neither read nor write to them. You have to first download them to your comp and then synchronise with itunes. That means of course, if you want to transfer your SIM from the iphone to another phone you'll have to somehow (worst case manually) copy your new contacts again as they were never written to the SIM on the iphone.

Syncing works fine through itunes via USB cable. Bluetooth is a laugh though, quite honestly. All it can do is connect to a headset. (unless I overlooked something and somebody comes up with some tricks to make it bluetooth-worthy.)

The camera quality is more like it used to be on mobiles from 3-5 years ago. It's 'ok' for doing a quick capture but it's ages behind the N95 for instance.

Another small annoyance is that I'm desperately seeking a sturdy but not bulky and not overpriced case for it. No joy here.

The thing is that you'll need one to protect the extremely fragile glass.

HOWEVER, the coolness factor weighs against some of the honestly serious shortcomings. AND mine is very stable so far. Not a single crash. The rubbish Win mobile I had on a Loox was knackered already after a couple of days. Reinitialise, all data lost etc... just the usual so well-known Microsoft quality, innit :D

Also yes SMS works instantly. There is a guide for getting voicemail to work here

Lots of other guides. Plus the guides are easy to follow.

I used iBrckr and then the guide linked from the frontpage which involved using a couple files and then using command lines via SSH

Odd, voicemail worked instantly for me, it just calls my number

I love mine to death :(

I had problems with that as well, I had to borrow my friend's MacBookPro, connect it to bluetooth, send my old phone's contacts to it through iSync, then connect the iPhone via USB (it wouldn't do it over bluetooth) and sync the contacts to it through iTunes. Was a pain.

I did some reading and the iPhone's blueooth is currently only for connecting headsets and stuff, not to transfer files/data between devices

That's why you don't buy a phone for it's camera :)

It's fragile? O.o

I've dropped mine 7 times now, and it's only got a coupe nick on the case, the glass/plastic front is still perfectly smooth and clear, I want to get one of those silicone cases though, but meh, if you're careful with it (unlike me for instance), you should be fine :D

That's why you don't buy a phone for it's camera :P
Well the thing is, we've been 'spoilt' over the last couple of years with ever better cameras (especially lenses) on mobiles that a lot of people actually don't need to carry their camera around anymore. Over in Europe the mobi is so much part of everyday life that any hi quality gadget add-on is always welcome... :P

Cheers for the reply btw. I've unlocked mine with the OSX method - errr... which I reckon makes sense somehow, doesn't it... :D

It seems like there are a few things missing though compared to the Windows method. I don't know, I'll probably start over again and see if I can find an unlock which does the SMS without further command line hacking.Don't get me wrong though, I do like it so far cos 'it just works' and when Apple omit something they usually have a good reason for it.

Thanks for the links. Appreciated.I used the same guide but I wasn't as lucky. Perhaps my SMS issue has something to do with roaming. I'm not on my home network right now, actually on a different continent.

Thanks for all the reply's guys (& gals)

It certainly helps to get user experience input  I am simply getting the phone for the coolness factor, as I am well aware that compared to N95 for example it is somewhat prehistoric. It does however look the business, and the multitouch is just about the coolest interface there is!

Just out of curiousity (again), the firmware update, is that optional, or does the phone just go ahead and update itself, and then duly inform you that it has done so ? (And most presumably f**k it up)

Many thanks again :)
