Just wanted to let the community know of something I experienced at an Apple Authorized Retailer. The retailers name will not be revealed and we will refer to it as the AAR (Apple Authorized Retailer) store.

So, I made a phone call to the AAR store to find out if they were selling used iMac G3s, because I wanted to buy one. There was a mint condition iMac Summer 2001 available for a pretty good price and I asked if the software CDs (including OS X 10.3 Panther) were included. The person said yes so I went over and bought the mac.

I was checking out the software CDs that came with the mac when I found the Panther discs the person said were included. To my surprise, they were not official shiny Apple CDs, they were CD-Rs roughly marked as Panther Disk 1 and Panther Disk 2 with markers. There was no Developer Tools CD or any of the other stuff that normally came with a Panther CD package.

This led me to believe that the AAR was distributing pirated software. It looked like they bought one set of CDs and copied a set for anyone who bought a mac. Anyone agree?

Well, you can not suppose it directly. However I find it rather strange that such a store does 'sell' you those disks. I find it hard to believe that they would do such thing and knowing it. Althoug Lkr can be right, it is still wrong of the AAR store to bundle it with that (maybe pirated version) of the DVD's.

I would suggest that you take it up with a AAP representative and if they are not helpfull call another and ask them what you should do.

I have no need to call the representatives because the discs are fine but another strange thing: When I called and asked if the CDs were included, the person seemed reluctant to dissapoint me so they made the CDs on the spot. Because when I checked the mac earlier, the Panther CDs werent in the set but then after I made the call about the CDs and went to buy the mac, the "pirated" Panther CDs magically appeared there.

I smell pirating in the air...
