I don't think Apple did the User Punctured the Lithium-ion Battery, The nature of Alkali Metals is that they fizz or explode on contact with water, so it may be to precipitation from the air that may caused it.

 

that makes a hell of a lot more sense than apple anti-unlocker bombs. Because you know that the US government is letting manufacturers put bombs in consumer electronics now... :)

well, this is one area where I can speak without putting my foot into my mouth.

 

Lithium does not react violently enough with water to produce enough force to blow the phone apart. When a chunk of pure lithium is placed into a beaker of water, the most it will do is fizz. The gas it gives off is hydrogen as well as a bit of Li(OH), or lithium hydroxide.

 

To produce a violent reaction with water using an alkali metal, you need something like pure sodium(Na) or potassium(K).

 

These metals will react violently enough to produce flames when dropped into water.

 

To make a big boom, a chunk of Cesium would do quite nicely.
