Hello, I recently built a new computer from pieces, and I wish to install Mac OS X on it. I already had a 10.4.8 working system on a Pentium 4 Prescott @ 3 GHz and an ASUS motherboard with Intel 848P. I used a 10.4.4 DVD to install, then upgraded to 10.4.8 via Paulicat's method (great thing :( )

However, the same DVD times out when searching for the root device. I think it is because my new motherboard uses a (too recent) JMicron IDE controller. Full specs of my machine

CPU: Core 2 Duo E4300

Motherboard: GA-G33M-DS2R

Northbridge: Intel G33

Southbridge: Intel ICH9R

IDE controller: JMicron JMB368

NIC: Realtek 8111 (also detected as 8168B under Linux)

Audio: Realtek ALC889A HD Audio (detected as ALC885 under Linux)

HW monitoring: ITE 8718

Other:

WD Caviar 80Gb IDE hard drive

NEC ND1100 IDE DVD burner

For the moment, my parents blocked my budget, so I must use this hardware to install everything.

First, I would like to know if Mac OS X could work on this machine, and if yes, have a solution to my problem,

either by doing some tricks or download ing a new DVD. If I have to download a new DVD, please be sure it will work with my IDE

controller, as I have no access to SATA drives.

Thanks in advance for any information

P.S.: For an obscure reason, I'm very unlucky when searching for torrents. Is it possible to PM me a torrent of the DVD ?

i've had a quick try at installing OSX on this exact motherboard. no success with either JAS10.4.8ppf1 or uphuckv3 dvd's using an ide-dvd burner. i get the still waiting for root device error. havn't had much time to troubleshoot or worry about it. going to borrow a sata dvd drive or try a usb-dvd install tonight. i'll let you know how it goes.

installed OSX 10.4.8 ppf1 via usb dvd burner

installed onto a sata drive

ide not recognised by the install dvd

testing the machine now

out of the box with no mods

- no ide

- no network

- no sound

- no QE/CI

going to see what can be easily hacked

*.kext editing atm

LAN

- get the realtek r1000 v1.4 installer

- copy .kext to extensions folder

- chown/chmod it

edit the info.plist file and add "0x811110ec" to string under <key>IOPCImatch</key>

reboot

AUDIO ALC889

- apparently no fix atm

Well, not exactly what I was waiting for, but at least, I know it installs.

I thought of this. Is there a way to modify the DVD image so that I can include the JMicron driver in the boot extensions ?

I don't care about having something tricky, I just it to work.

Hum, what about the new uphuck 1.4i DVD ? I'm quite interested in downloading a more recent DVD, and the uphuck ones interest me a lot.

Which one should I choose, taking in count the fact I need something working on a first download ? 1.3 or 1.4i

i'm getting the uphuck 1.4 now, but i don't know about the JMicron support. If its as easy as .kext editing i can try it out. However, it probably isn't that simple. I'll let you know how it goes with the Uphuck 1.4 +/- JMicron kext editing

For those who are looking for small mATX boards with good performance, Asus has a new G33M board, the P5K-VM. People have reported this board being able to go up to 500Mhz FSB!!! Even good for those with E6300. Has anyone tried it out? I'm also wondering if it will be more compatible with OSx86 than the Gigabyte G33M-DS2R.

thanks!

Hi guys, I have the P5K-VM board, and have tried Uphuck 1.4r2 and am still stuck on the 'waiting for root device' screen. It sounds like it's an IDE (JMicron) issue as my DVD is on the IDE bus. I'm going to try adding jmicron support, and see if that works. If not, I'll try a UBS dvd.

Any thoughts?

GA-G33M-DS2R update,.... loaded 10.4.9 v1.2 uphuck,...

intel gma X3100 1024x768 only,... 0x029c2 no go, tried with gma900 no res change,....

no ide,

sata lg dvd,

bios, changed to ahcpi or something,

boots ok,

7600gs works, booth cores, + temp monitor,

sleep not working, universal 2 kernel,

firewire works,

lan eathernet works

sound don't, have a usb sound from geeks, blue thing

bios updated to fa and fd, have no 2.5 multiplier for memory E2160 at 2.46ghz ok,

for micro-atx case,.... considering gtr gt 3 case, could have got p35 motherboard,....

in-win bt611 case, sounds good for testing, till I figure out, I'll drag this box to work if needed,....

then I would need a 7200gs low profile card,... low profile firewire 800, and try the esata bracket,...

cooling,... stock 45-49c, have no ac in the house,... cnps8000 looks good, new cnps8700 also

but not out yet, and expensive,

running 2x1gb 800mhz sticks, figured to run 2.5x with it at 3ghz, anybody got that working ? cmos clear maybe, default setting load,...

ctrl F1 opens memory timing,... no overvolt , also cpu has 6-9 multiplier, means, could run at 6, for lower power

silverstone has also a ml02 case, fanless psu,... litle bit cramped, for the price, the gtr sounds better, ehm, maybe not,

gtr has 2 intake fans,...

- uphuck , 1.4 anybody upload to usenet/usenext ? download at 500k

cpu shows 1.5ghz with temp monitor, is that right, throttle works,.. is that sse3

still like to get the x3100 working,... to jam into a small case, for work I don't need nvidia, and for gimp editing neather,

the osx does not support h264 on nvidia,.... at least wow runs on the 7600 ok at 1680x1050, rotate works too,

need another lcd, recomendations ?

xbench, geekbench later, maybe I'll dig out my 15k ultra wide scsi, why not, don't need to buy a raptor,

does the adaptec scsi work ? exept noise, for a full case, there is disk dampening kit, work, should work on the 15k too,

but would not have room in the small case,.... good old days, sun utras, disk, rrrrrhrhrhhrrgrgrggrgrgrgrrggrgr, dddddrrdrrrr

shoot me an mail,... team up, thanks, cheers, rob

I have just up-graded my Hackintosh to (check sig) from Pentiam D 3.0 GB, Mobo GA-945PL-S3.

This was working fine with 10.4.10 upgrade

Now just installed OS X using USB DVD drive

1- I can not get the sound.

2- If I restart the Hacki-- with an external HDD (on). the keyboard wont work, I have to turn it off and restart the computer again.

3- DVD drive (IDE) not working.

You can also try a SATA DVD drive. They are certainly coming down in price...only aroudn $35. Here's a sony one for $34 shipped.

I would love to hear what your experience is with the P5K-VM. Please report back after you tried the install! Thanks!

OK, I tried a USB drive and it installed!! I have uphuck 1.4 on it - not r2, that didn't work but it may have been corrupted. As far as I can tell, no sound, and no network yet, but it boots fast and feels snappy with a core 2 dup 1.8 on a PK5-VM. The SATA drive really flies, and the onboard video is fine.

I think we should try and build an installer for this board as it will take the upcoming 45 nm core 2 quad chips, and 8 GB of 1333 ram - Anyone want a VERY cheap Macpro?

I'll keep you updated on my progress.

update,....with 800mhz intel processors, no 2.0 2.5 memory mutliplier, max low 3.33xwith gskill 800mhz memory up to 950mhz on memory, with .2v+ (don't think it needs it), runs E2160 at 2.7ghz, 2x 1gb,... so for 800mhz cpu's recommend getting pc8000+ PC8500+ memory,.. stock fan, right now open xqpack case, sometimes cpu fan don't spin,... no hurry for new cooler yet,... cnps8000 on top of list, anybody else use a low profile cooler ?locks p with reboot screen,... maybe Vuze (Azureus 3.0) problem, looking for a quiet nvidia low profile card, preffered that it can run wow at 1680x1050 usablethe 8400gs looks good , but it's not running yet,... case, new aopen a340 looks promissing, DVD-RAM with lite-on,.... no go, works only with toast in udf, but nukes existing data,... not quiet R/W stick it in and forget it,...hotplug sata/esata with the supplied bracket don't work, if you detach a sata after boot , diskutil hangs,... .... looking for a firewire 1394b 800 with texas instruments chipset,... recomendations ??any quiet 5 1/4 external usb firewire cases for dvd, what don't have a fan running all the time ?does the firewire 800 make a difference for 18x burning ?since I'am thinking of sticking in a mobile rack in the only 5 /14 slot, so I can change disks forwindows xp boot for work,...anybody tried the gigabyte backup software, for windoze ?sound not chasing it,... using a usb sound stick with microfone in,.... but it HUMMs when power is off,... anybody got a usb sound card, what has a litle relay, aka, no humm with power off, griffen has one what goes on the desktop,... anybody tried.X3100 don't work, would be nice, to have at least vesa, for 1680x1050 and 1600x1200,...would I known this,... thought somebody said it worked,.... I would have gotten the ATX board, with P35 chipset,....temp monitor don't show anymore,...sysinfo about mac, blanks screen, looks up,...tried with ACHI mode off, no boot,..next, bluetooth test,...webcam ? anyone works ? keep me posted, feedback, critic, suggestions, test, improve,...,.... forgot to tell,..... SLEEP don't work,.... .really need that,.... anybody got it to work, send email for cookies and bier,....

..next, bluetooth test,...webcam ? anyone works ? keep me posted, feedback, critic, suggestions, test, improve,...,....

Your posting style is crazy! Like a stream of consciousness...

Doesn't the G33M-DS2R have built in firewire? Firewire 400 is fine, IMO. Have you bought a 8400gs? I don't recommend one, the 8-series isn't working yet.

Trex, any progress on the P5K-VM? I'd love to hear what you've been able to get working and what doesn't work still. Did you also try to overclock? I'm really interested in buying this board over the gigabyte g33m-ds2r since it's cheaper and has much better overclocking potential.

Thanks!

so far sleep don't work,.... anybody got sleep to work, ?

any other motherboard ? with sleep working and native sata ?

thanks, Rob

Hi

I am new to Mac so maybe I might wrong, Sleep seems to be working with me, but waking the computer up, nothing seems to be working. Or I can just say I do not know what button to wake the pc with.

you can define in the bios, the power button to wake,

on the p5ld2 sleep works, aka, move mouse, or push power button,

and it's back, bios select S3 ,

think, there is a inherited problem with ahci mode due ich9r with suspend,

anybody have a core duo/quad motherboard that sleep / suspend works ?

even native sata ?

Hi Rainman, I had some more time to work on it so here's where I'm at:

I got ethernet to work, and installed all the stock applications using Pacifist. I also am overclocking my core 2 1.8 to 3.09mhz, and the thing just rips!!! It boots in 14 seconds! Getting a little hot under load though, so I'm starting to research heatsinks. Any advice?

Sound doesn't work at all and I've tried the 883 patch, and azalia. Doesn't matter to me though since I'll be running firewire audio.

Native SATA in AHCI mode works solidly, and is very fast.

Now Video, is where I need help. The p5k-vm board has the intel x3000 video, but I don't know which driver to use for it as there is no x3000 patch that I know of. I am getting video now, but it's very basic, and slow. Do I install GM950? or do I have to enable 3d, GL etc... by hand? Anyone know how to approach this?

Sleep doesn't work for me.

I can dual boot into XP, but I have to change AHCI mode to IDE in bios first.

USB works.

Firewire Works.

Speedstep works.

and overclocking is awsome.

Have to get some decent video happening, and I'll be all set.

That's it. I'm pretty happy right now - this thing rips!

Peace,

Trex-7

...Getting a little hot under load though, so I'm starting to research heatsinks. Any advice?

There are so many! Maybe a zalman cnps9700 or a Thermalright Ultra 120 or xp-90

For video, get a nVidia 7-series gfx card of your choice. 7100, 7300,7600,7800, 7900 etc. Just make sure it's 256mb vram, or less, not 512mb. They work wonderfully with full CI/QE/Res switching, under Natit or Titan.

Check out the wiki too -> http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.4.8

Great board!!

Did the original install with Jas 10.4.8 V2, manual upgrade to .9 and used the .10 installer torrent with 8.10.1 kernel (included). I just got done playing around with kexts and bundles in system config - tried to update all possible to the most recent using combination of .9 and .10 original installers and Pacifist; clone your working 10.4.10 HD first and install in ext. USB enclosure - trial and error can be painful. OC'ed to 2.4 G (9 X 266, 3.33 mult. on memory) and it's running sweet now.

Dual displays with QE/CI/All res (Natit), Ethernet, wireless (old Linksys WMP54G V2.0 PCI card) and audio (2 ch only) working great. All info available here if you search

Dual boot OSX and Vista Ultimate (separate drives) via bios HD redirects (AHCI mode, native)

Only issues so far are no sleep, iTunes error -50 when trying to preview videos in store (otherwise audio works fine) and HW monitor reading high and unable to "discover" other sensors aside from CPU's, HD Temps and clock speed.

Xbench results and system details attached. Beats the hell out of my 20" iMac Duo (First Rev) heheheheh....

For the cooler, I have Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro. It works pretty well for me. It's a bit huge so make sure your case fits, but with the 92mm fan it's pretty quiet.

As for the video, I don't think the x3100 works under OS X yet, so you'll have to buy a separate card. As synaesthesia said, a Nvidia 7xxx series will work well. I'm looking at the evga 7600gt from newegg. With the $20 paypal coupon, it will be a sweet deal.

Could I ask you a few questions? First, which CPU do you have and how much are you overclocking the FSB to? Also, what firewire audio are you using and are you booting into WinXP on a different disk? I guess I'm a little confused why you need to set to AHCI to ide.

This sounds like it's getting to be a great little boad!

Thanks!
