"You can look at the software that they sell. All their licensed kid stuff. So, what we're doing with the PlayStation Portable is really establishing a new marketplace, and establishing, frankly, a new beachhead."

- Peter Dille, Sony US Senior Vice President of Marketing, on comparing PSP to DS

“The idea of a handheld rivalry with Nintendo is an irrelevance. Those formats don't appear in our planning. It's not a fair comparison; not fair on them, I should stress. That sounds arrogant, maybe, but it's the truth. With the DS , it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen. But I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that."

- Phil Harrison, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, on comparing PSP to DS in an interview with MCV

"It’s probably too cheap…"

– Ken Kutaragi, Regarding the $499 to $599 price point

– Ken Kutaragi, regarding competition from Microsoft and Nintendo

"…for consumers to think to themselves ‘I will work more hours to buy one’. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."

- Jack Tretton, Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO

"If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1200 bucks for it."

"A bit pricey."

- Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, speaking about Nintendo Wii in an interview with the age.com.au

"We have a lot of respect for Nintendo, but with a December launch, how much stock are they going to get at a AU$400 price point? What is the consumer offering? So I don't think anyone will do more units than a PS2 this (Christmas)."

- Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, regarding the launch of Nintendo Wii

"Sorry you didn't have the opportunity to buy a PS3 this year, but I'm sure it beats lining up in a queue for hours on end only to be told the store has sold out."

- Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Australia in an interview with the age.com.au

"There’s this sort of misunderstanding that the Blu-ray disc player for movies is somehow burdening the console with unnecessary cost. That is completely not true... Once we had that storage capacity on Blu-ray Disc, adding the movie playback functionality was extremely cost-effective, [the cost] is actually non-existent."

Pretty awesome qoutes. My favorites are "Riiiiiddddgggggeeeeee Racer!" and "Five Hundred and Ninety Nine U S Dollars". The 599 thing always reminds me of Steve Jobs and the iPhone lol. The PSP wouldnt be too bad if it had some decent games, and the PS3 just blows compared to a 360! Real men play games on the PC, and play games on the 360 when they realize how pricey that new vid card is!

Frankly I was a little surprised to see people mocking the (arrogand indeed) quotes of sony managers.

Sony is a company that prefers to innovate instead of building devices with off-the-shelve solutions, just to have something to sell and dominate the market. The later is what M$ has been doing, especially with XBOX.

We tend to like the fact that Apple also designs devices from scratch, having the needs/preferences of the consumer in mind, instead of aiming directly at his pocket.

Having said that I would like to clarify that I do not consider either Apple nor Sony to be not-for-profit organisations. I just prefer their marketing tactic over the one that M$ has adopted.

Sony is a great company. They innovate and usually most of their products are quality. But some products such as DVD Drives are re-badged Lite-Ons which don't even read CD/DVD's properly. Their Walkman MP3 players till some time back didn't even support MP3.

The PS3 is atleast according to me just over-hyped and way ahead of its time. Even their consumer products had really gone done in quality. But now Sony is doing a great and actually releasing great quality innovative products.

LOL, and xbox 360 has better performance in games... and uh, especially real world situations, cause its not f***ing impossible to program for =]

but those quotes are funny as hell!

Yeah 360 framerates are way better. The Cell processor wouldnt be as bad if hmm, people used it :tomato: .

I dont know what your issue with the xbox360 is. Is XboxLive not innovative? A cross game/cross media network for people to have fun with friends online? In terms of consoles XboxLive is the best thing there is. Also the 360 is nice and diplomatic. It satisfies the majority of console customers.

I dont want blu-ray. I dont want playstation network. I dont want to pay $600. When I dont feel like playing games on my PC, or when there is an exclusive title I turn on my Xbox360. I can rent movies from it, I can buy TV shows and download game demos. Just because MS chose to be the most overall appealing (i.e. not taking risk, being as safe as they could) doesnt make them not innovative.
