Moduliz0r
All has been well with my PC lately. I had OSX86 installed, then two days ago I reinstalled XP64, and then installed Ubuntu Studio. They all worked OK at first. Yesterday, XP started updating. When it asked me to restart, I thought nothing of it and let it restart. Then, when it came back up, it took ages to pass the "Loading your personal settings" screen, when it eventually went away, I saw my wallpaper and nothing else, no start bar and no icons. CTRL+ALT+DEL didn't do anything either. If you leave it for about 10 minutes you'll get the start bar, and the icons on the desktop. But, everything will have the "Busy" cursor and be unresponsive, the task manager still wont come up to CTRL+ALT+DEL, and the icons are all the "Not found" icons. I have waited ages and still had no progress after this. Everything was perfect until those updates came in. Looks like Microsoft really buggered it this time. This morning I gave them a call, I got to technical support after listening to their coma-inducing phonemusic. I spoke to a woman and she told me I couldn't get support because my XP software is OEM, I built my PC. So they won't help me at all. It seems that I must have made the update so I must be the one I should talk to. So, they make an update, which causes my computer to stop working, and then won't do ANYTHING to help me. Why thank you, Microsoft. This is probably an attempt to force users into Vista. I might write them a letter, an email won't get noticed and they don't speak much English on the phone. Either way, I'm not too happy with Microsoft. I want my Garry's Mod, I want my Deathmatch, I want my Defcon (but yay there's a Mac version), I want my Half-Life 2 and I want my CSS... I also want my Unreal Tournament. =P I'll poke around with XP, see if I can restore it in any way. Mac (OSX86) was there to help me still, but Crossover just causes it to lock up and tell me I need to restart my Mac.
Danyel
Hi Moduliz0r: I'm sorry to hear about your problems with Windows XP x64 and Windows Update. We are just running Dell Machines and 32-bit version of Windows XP Pro. Fortunately, we haven't had any issues like this. I wonder if there is much difference between 32-bit and x64 versions. Do you have your documents backed up? When Windows gives me trouble, sometimes I just "nuke" it and do fresh installation. As for OSx86, it's remarkably stable on various machines I've installed on (Dell Desktops and Laptops, my own mPC, etc). But I'm using an older version (Myzar 10.4.6). --danyel
Brownnose The Pirate
Hi Moduliz0r: I'm sorry to hear about your problems with Windows XP x64 and Windows Update. We are just running Dell Machines and 32-bit version of Windows XP Pro. Fortunately, we haven't had any issues like this. I wonder if there is much difference between 32-bit and x64 versions. they are totally different, and sp2 broke my xp x64 a bit but over all the updates worked fine. xp x64 is just server 2003 set up as a workstation and branded as "xp" and does not have all the server features.... and its updates are much more stable than xp 32 bit's so i dont understand why this would happen. did you install a "driver update" from them... that messed my install once, because it installed a driver for something i didnt have but that was aparently system important.... it was wierd. i can help you with xp x64 if you need it and are able to discribe it better, but as for that install its hosed, so you are going to have to redo it. Moduliz0r
Thanks for your replies =) I find that XP64 is one of the worst, most unstable and incompatible (in both hardware and software) operating I have ever come across. I am not exaggerating here at all, after a fresh install, you get BSoDs... Yes, on my third boot I was greeted by a lovely blue screen after logging on. I too just nuke windows quite often. It's easy but I hate having to install all my hardware drivers as it takes hours, and I cant stand a computer with a resolution of 640x480 with 8-bit colours even if it is only for an hour or so. I'm pretty sure there was some driver updates in there, but Automatic Updates aren't very informative. It does boot in safe mode, and I managed to restore back a day, BUT when it booted up (successfully) after restoring, Updates had *already* downloaded them again and did the same thing. I am definitely going to have to write to Microsoft.
Brownnose The Pirate
Thanks for your replies =) I find that XP64 is one of the worst, most unstable and incompatible (in both hardware and software) operating I have ever come across. interesting, it was quite stable for me, actually the most..... it is hardware picky though, but thats getting fixed and is hardware manufacturers fault. software is iffy if its older and or contains 16bit parts.... i would recomend nliting a disk with all your drivers and cause it to be unattended so you dont have to go through that or type anything in in the future. give this a try: http://www.nliteos.com/

apowerr
Im really sorry to hear this =(. I've made sure that all of my hardware is fully 64 bit compatabile. I havent had any issues with Vista since my Feburary install, but just in case I have copies of Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Kubuntu and OS X 86! When Windows fails I'll usually install Linux as a temp, untill I feal like dealing with the hassle of reinstalling all my old programs. At one point I used linux for over a week because I was so busy
Moduliz0r
Well I'm sure I won't be getting a 64-bit OS again, at least until they are a little more... supportive. The system restore worked, but it installed the updates again before I'd logged in. >.> I don't plan on Vista, unless I can get a really good deal on it, a.k.a. not any time soon. Even then it'd have to be the expensive Ultimate - I can't stand any cripples. OSX/86 = YAY. I also don't like how there's so many silly versions of Vista. I've used Linux alone for months before, it's nice but it can get a little irritating. Dual/Tripple/Quad Booting is the best way to get around @sandmanfvrga: They didn't say it directly, but their attitude was a sort of "Well we didn't make it, it's not our problem" one. Moduliz0r
What you mean is, it's Microsoft's way of saying "Use Windows Vista, or we'll **** your PC up!". I was already using Windows Yeah, OSX86 is always there to smile and get the job(s) done. Thanks for the replies guys I've got it working now, but after 2 extra visits to Safe mode, and having to disable automatic updates and disabling Security Centre. I will be writing a small letter to Microsoft, but I know they will disregard it.
Brownnose The Pirate
hmm, good thing you got it working, just nlite the disk for the (allmost garunteed) problem and keep backups of all your important stuff, then the fix is just a reformat away =]
Moduliz0r
Yeah I will, I have an external HDD for backups. But it's in OS X Extended format :/ I still have the Internet to upload some backups Reformatting is fun.

thegodfaza
Did you try running windows in verbos mode. I had problems once like that. Ran it in verbos and found a hard drive fault was the problem. Anyway you should consider getting Windows XP Media Center Edition. I find it more stable than XP. It combines Professional with some great multimedia apps. Moduliz0r
@thegodfaza: Only if you're paying, it's the main reason why I haven't bought XP Pro 32-bit yet. I would love to revert back to 32-bit.
