correct me if I am wrong, but when the mactels come out, are they all going to have just intel integrated graphics? I don't understand how that would benefit apple, or intel for that matter. I know apple has been known to use both ATI and NVIDIA in the past, so how long will it take them to come up with some kexts for the rest of us non Intel folks? The timeframe for mactels makes me think that drivers must be just around the corner for quartz extreme and acceleration, so they can work the bugs out.

Am I crazy, or does this make sense?

Apple might have drivers but havent tried anything from there and I dont know if it would even work

I tried the geforce drivers from the standard downloads section about a week ago... It will not install due to an architecture mismatch...

I will try these tonight and see if its any different... I don't think it will be ...

....

I just read the doc's attached to the update. It seams that when you install this on a apple ppc it checks the firmware of the graphics card for a specific firmware version. If the installer picks up that it is an old version of firmware... It updates both the os extentions (drivers) AND the firmware of the geforce card... If it even loads up on your system after downloading it I don't think it would work... I would love to see vendor's for x86 products bundling firmware updates with there drivers!!! :)... I could just imagine all the noobs calling help desks around the world...

"Oh yeah, I know computers... but I installed your drivers and the screen went blank... so I reset the computer... Now it will not turn on..."

But for us!!! it would save soooooo much time!

seeing as how even ppc macs have drivers for geforce and ati cards... once the official osx86 comes out. im sure there will be drivers... who knows if we will get them before then

Yes, however the problem is that Apple is releasing it on there "own" hardware... That was the whole reason for the mainboard chip to lock down the os...

But I think that due to how stable this thing runs and how quick it is they would be mad not to release it as an os only...

I think mr billy gates is going to sweat like hell soon...

I just can't wait to get hold of the appleserver for x86 ... lol

i dont see how they could lock down drivers if we got the os running... the protection is on the os... once that step is bypassed..... it shouldn't be hard? besides.. even with custom motherboards. it still has to support standard ati and nvidia cards.. nvidia and ati aren't going to be making special cards for apple any time soon

but then again... standard nvidia and ati cards have always been flashable to work for ppc macs.... so a *hack* like that if they do go that route isnt inconcievable.....

I am not disputing that at all. There has to be a way for it to work. It’s just a pity that the gui for osx doesn't actually run on xfree86, it just let you run *nix gui applications on them... Otherwise we would all be downloading the bsd drivers :P...

Anyway If anyone is interested in the ROMs for the BIOS’s on both ATI and NVIDIA cards I posted, a few links on information regarding flashing of cards to work on a ppc. I am not recommending it tho as logicly it will not work.

However my thought is if it was that easy I am sure that someone would have already posted the fix for it...

I am sure tho that if someone can patch Rosetta to 'run' on a sse2 proc then I am sure that people are working on the drivers. Be patient as I am sure it will come soon! :)

Ditto,

Let me know if those drivers work. No time for me to try them as Im stuck trying to get the onboard lan to work on my MoBo

:P

I'm sure ATI will release them at some point. But I doubt we see them until it gets closer to the release of actual hardware from Apple (ie, the final hardware for x86 macs). Until then they only really need to make sure stuff runs on the dev boxes, which stuff does now of course. Maybe we'll get lucky and some 10.4.x updates will include some. I mean, some of the network drivers included for x86 aren't even for NICs on the dev boxes, so we could get lucky in other areas.

You definitely won't be hacking ppc drivers to work though. Rosetta and all won't help you when it comes to running kernel code and stuff.

Again, there are only a handful of PC cards that could be flashed for Mac use. Those cards had to be nearly identical to the Mac retail counterparts to work. So it's a way to save a little money, but that's about all.

About two years ago, I bought an ATI Radeon 8500Pro Mac Edition for the G4 tower I had at the time. I had investigated flashing, but it just wasn't feasible. So I ended up paying about three times the cost of the PC version to get the Mac version. Normally I would feel ripped off, but I was offered $200 for my old card (Apple OEM 32MB ATI Radeon 7500). As it turns out, that Radeon 7500 was the best card that would physically fit in a G4 Cube.

Anyway, it's my hope that the Intel Macs help Apple get into the gaming scene. That way consumers can use any retail card, without any need for flashing, and not feel totally ripped off.
