Having fritzed my ASUS P5VD2-MX setup with JAS 10.4.9 update (never gets past the Darwin loading line; constantly reboots, though it worked perfectly on my HP dv6205us laptop, so good on JAS) I decided that before I install JAS 10.4.9 update on my Asrock setup I would try and image the hard drive to a new hard drive. Enough people have told me that doing so wouldn't work that I was put off (and trying to resize the OS X partion without major/minor data corruption... don't go there!), but I decided to give imaging the complete hard drive a go with the most recent version of Acronis True Image 10. I selected manual and didn't let Acronis resize the partitions to compensate for the different size of the new Hard Drive (both drives are Sata). After very roughly an hour... my tri-boot system had copied perfectly to the new drive without any issues and I am, so far, a very happy Easter bunny. :D It doesn't cost a lot, but it saves a lot! If I discover any issues I will come right back here and report and perhaps others could do so, also.

If anyone has had complete success with other methods, especially free ones (Carbon Cloner, etc), let us know! :) For instance, I am amazed how often people mention Partition Magic 8 and Acronis Director without mentioning the free and excellent Gparted, which is quite often updated.

Again, the usual disclaimers and urgings that you back up your data apply!

Acronis TrueImage imaging has been a successful for many.

And to take full advantage of the compression option, it is suggested to write to zero the unused space in osx (through diskutility), you'll have smaller image.

Hi cbmkgd, thank you so much for the pointer! I want to try and image to DVDs and had been told not to try compression via imaging software. I was hearing so many mixed messages about cloning and disasters (alot of them were about Vista also) that it put me off taking action until disaster struck with the 10.4.9 update. A couple of gurus put me off trying to resize, though I think I found it possible using qparted; I was told the resized partition would be damaged goods so I reformatted and started over.

Just for precision: I was talking about compression of the .tib image, which shouldn't affect the partition size (at least it doesn't for osx). Never had problems restoring a compressed osx (true)image.

I myself image only individual partitions, taking care to note where they were (esp for windows type).

Thanks! I wrote it. Nice to see people are talking about it.

Sincerely,

aka Goodtime (since the cat is out of the bag).

I like the aesthetics of the packaging. Fun stuff! Looking forward to trying it. Good on you. :)
