RyanThaDude29
What do you think is the best format to share files between OS X and Windows? FAT32 is out of the question due to filesize restrictions although a great choice for smaller files. I've used MacDrive for WindowsXP to access the HFS partitions without fail. Only problem was that if OS X wasn't shut down properly, MacDrive would complain and mount read-only. Other than that it was very good to me. However version 6 doesn't work with Vista and I'm not shelling out any more money for 7 at the moment. In OS X I have MacFuse installed along with the NTFS 3G driver. It's working much better and faster but still have my doubts to use it full-time. It has corrupted a drive in a past version which makes me alittle uneasy. So what do you think, HFS/MacDrive in Windows or NTFS in Mac? asap18
NTFS, macfuse worked pretty well for me when I transferred a 2GB ISO. FAT32 will never improve although Macfuse will in the future. Ag3ntS
With HFS, you have tools like MacDrive which are much more polished than MacFUSE, but cost a little bit. NTFS support in OS X, even through MacFUSE, is still wonky; NTFS volumes are mounted as network shares and thus are limited in functionality. If you're going to spend more time in OS X, go with HFS, more time in XP, go with FAT32 and hope you don't have big files. zoomie
Have you considered network attached storage (NAS)? If you've got enough spare computer parts, you could build a NAS device. I'm using a Gentoo Linux box as a NAS device. I can store files on the NAS via FTP or NFS without the file size limitations of FAT32 or Samba. You could use a full blown Linux distro or FreeBSD to run your NAS. Or if a full distro is overkill, you could use FreeNAS http://www.freenas.org/. FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD. Its fairly easy to setup and can be configured via a web page. Another alternative is to buy a stand alone NAS like this: http://www.adstech.com/products/NAS-806-EF...?pid=NAS-806-EF With gigabit ethernet, my transfer rates are close to that of an external USB hard drive. I'm not too worried about the inherent insecurity of NFS since its just my home network and inside my firewall. So what do you think, HFS/MacDrive in Windows or NTFS in Mac? I've got the same problem. I need to format my entire hard drive and was wondering what the shared partition will be, NTFS+MacDrive or HFS+MacFuse (although haven't yet used MacFuse). With MacFuse I'm really worried that it will corrupt my hard drive. Anyone else had issues with it? One major reason I would like to be able to use MacFuse is because I also want to be able to edit documents stored in my XP/Vista partition too. Also If for some odd reason I wanted to take my hard drive to a friends house and connect to their pc, they would need to have MacDrive to view the files (long...) Vertigo50
Anyone got any advice on this? 1. Delete OS X 2. Reformat to NTFS 3. Boot Windows 4. Be happy.
