JohnPopes
This works for me if it doesn't for you... badluck! btw im not guilty of you loosing your personal XXX kinky porn collection or any other important files.. I got xp and osx86 jas 10.4.8 dual booting without acronis or anything tricky like that. Here are the steps: 1- Use XP cd to format your disk and make 2 partitions [or 3, 4 whatever, as long as you have space on the first for xp and on the second for osX86] 2- Install XP on the first partition using ntfs [really i guess it doesnt matter] 3- In windows format the second partition to fat32 4- Put in your jas 10.4.8 dvd, reboot, and use the disk partition tool to format the second partition [you formatted fat32 previously] in mac extended journaled. Install on that. 5- After that your pc should boot into Mac OS, and the darwin bootloader wont give you time to choose options, so edit your /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist and add: <key>Timeout</key> <string>8</string> just before the </dict> This should give you 8 seconds before Mac OS starts at boot. You can replace with the seconds you want. Note: it probably wont let you edit the com.apple.boot.plist, so copy it to your desktop, edit it, and replace the original one with that. it will ask your password and that's it. 6- Just press any key during that time, for me it lists my partitions including the one with XP. Just choose it. btw im writing this just from memory if anything's wrong or not clear enough post here or PM me. cbmkgd
This is indeed one of the regular ways to install and dual-boot osx. im writing this just from memory if anything's wrong or not clear enough post here Just a few details, rapidly: Make sure the partition made for osx is primary, not logical; especially important when one starts from already existing xp system. Also, problems have been reported when installing osx after an extended partition: so make sure the primary partition for osx is before an extended partition (if there's one at all). The partition for osx should be at least 4GB; go for 10GB or more, depending on your needs. Check the Wiki Hardware Compatibility List, or search this forum, to see if your hardware will be tolerated by osx. I also have a d: on my disk1. On disk2, I have e:, which is for storage. I created a partiton on disk2 using some space from e: (60GB). So now I have a 60GB Fat32 partiton on g:. The g: partion is ACTIVE. Does everything above sound ok? Would the next step be to install OSX86 on the g: partition, reboot in OSX, then edit the darwin bootloader file? JohnPopes
if you have two disks u may have to set your bios to choose the one your booting from. well i only have one disk so this method works for me.. you can try and install osx on that and then if osx starts automatically you can follow my steps and edit the darwin boot file and see if you can start windows too. if not well use the windows cd to fix the windows boot with fixmbr and all those settings, but that will probably give you an hfs partition error if you find some way to boot back the osx, like acronis. before editing the file try with your bios to see if you can select the operating system.. but look something can go wrong and you can loose your windows files so backup them if you have any important. if youre willing to lose everything just use my method and have xp and osx on the same disk and use the second to store files. you can even format it with fat32 so you can access it in osx and xp. there are various tutorials on how to get dual boot with two disk and they seem rather easy! decide what to do and post here the results, it can help someone else Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/45058-the-simplest-dual-boot-xp-and-osx86-ever-on-a-single-disk/#findComment-322269 Share on other sites

JohnPopes
What would cause me to lose my windows files? I tried installing OSX on my second disk, but when I got to the Disk Utility, it hung up at "Mouting Disk". Are you using a SATA drive? im not saying it will damage your windows files. just playing it safe. the disk utility can't detect any of your disks and partitions?? uhmm look for your disk on the HCL.. maybe you should change strategy. install windows and osx86 on the same disk in different partitions just like the way i did, and use the other disk for storage. Or if you prefer install windows on one disk, and osx86 on the other and see if you can switch boot with your bios. Now this is pointless if you cant detect your disks on the disk utility... try unpluging one disk, and then the other to see if it works with just one, and wich one. the other option is: dont use the disk utility. format the partition in fat32 with windows and install on that i guess mac os will format it correctly before installing. but then again, if the disk utility cant mount your disks, maybe the fat32 partition wont be available on the installer... try and post results! ---------------------------X------------------------------- just keep tapping F8 to get dual boot LOL i did that too before i got pissed for booting to osx so many times cuz i was distracted looking at some pair of {censored} on tv while the pc booted.. at least now i have 5 seconds to stare and still choose xp lol Edited March 13, 2007 by JohnPopes Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/45058-the-simplest-dual-boot-xp-and-osx86-ever-on-a-single-disk/#findComment-322663 Share on other sites

Read some of the guides but not very clear If my hard drive is SATA and my DVD Drive is IDE, am I able to install the jas 10.4.8? I remember reading somewhere in the forum that its impossible to install using IDE DVD drives. Is this true? Also, must the hard drive be formatted into FAT32 in order to install Mac OS X? I've tried to install on a USB hard drive formatted in NTFS but no hard drive was detected. Is it that MAC OS X can only detect FAT32 but not NTFS hard drive? Please guide me here. Thanks About the IDE drive i dont know but you have a very simple solution.. try lol. For the installer to recognize a partition to install Mac OS it cant be ntfs formatted. Fat32 are recognized, but even better is to have an unformatted one, i always use that. Use your XP cd to boot from and erase an entire partition [if you dont know what you are doing, don't do nothing, im not responsible for your actions, if u delete xp partition.. shame on you lol], and then boot from the MacOS dvd and install to that partition. GonGong
Thanks JohnPopes, Now, at least I'm clear about the Mac OS with FAT32 only. Will try to do it with a spare drive 1st. Hopes it will work. Does the second partition, formatted in mac extended journaled, fall in that category? So that no second OSX86 (for repair purposes) could be installed on partition 3,4 etc.? You can only have four primary partitions on a drive (normally) with the old MBR way of doing things. One special kind of primary partitition is called an 'extended' partition, that can contain many 'logical' partitions.(One of those things that started too simple, and got complexified in a weird way just to keep backward compatibility... something which lasted too long, so that even today pc users -- and hackintoshes -- are stuck with that) So when on this board and elsewhere you'll read about creating a primary partition before the extended partition, just make sure you understand how to use you partitioning tool, and if it gives you a choice of types, chose "primary" and not "logical". And if you have an extended partition, make sure that new primary partition is before it. pilsator
Thanks. I guess this has to do with the logical volume manager. Me dumb Apple user read an article about it but I guess this is not for OSX86 (?) I use apples disk partition tool which doesn't let me choose "primary" or "logical" (if I'm not blind). Main thing for me is that I can install a second system for repair what should work if I didn't get you wrong. Thanks to the info and help from this forum I have a machine now that seems to be reliable, quiet and cool and didn't cost a fortune. cheers, pilsator Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/45058-the-simplest-dual-boot-xp-and-osx86-ever-on-a-single-disk/#findComment-342221 Share on other sites

cbmkgd
Should do. But if you have an nvidia card (for example), a 10.4.8 (or 10.4.9) recent dvd with 8.8.x kernel will allow you to use Titan/natiT solution to get better graphic support. That's one of the advantages.
