The green window control button "+" on the top left hand corner is what I'm talking about. I was just wondering what exactly it does. It seems that when I click on it, it suddenly resizes the window to a random size. In Finder (in "applications"), when I press it several times, it just makes the window narrower and narrower, until at last it is so narrow that it couldn't be any narrower and becomes so long that it went beyond the edge of the screen and is impossible to resize back to its original size.

So... what exactly is the purpose ot it? I know that it is not for maximizing the window, like in Windows. Thanks in advance.

its an efficient/smart maximize, it use the max space thats needed and not more. when you hit it again, it will revert to its original size.

But when hitting it when viewing the "Applications" in Finder, it becomes thinner and thinner and longer and longer

And doesn't seem to revert to its original size. Unlike all other applications.

i dont get this behaviour.

You don't get that behaviour when you select the Applications from the sidebar, but you do get that behaviour if you click on the green button after "go --> applications". As far as I know, it continues to become longer and longer, and the only way to fix it is to change the view to something other than icons view.

And... when I minimize it, the genie effect renders it thus: (it's that streak there)

And then, in the dock, the thumbnail looks like this:

Yes, it's too clever by half. If you have a large display it makes good sense to size the window to the maimum needed but if you stuck at 1024x768 it sort of sucks. You can download stoplight and tell the buttons how you want them to behave.

I'm using a 1440x900. Considering that the 15.4" Macbook Pro, the 17" iMac, are all this resolution, I think that it is high enough.
