loonymonkey
Is it safe to use Jas OSx86? Since its a hacked install DVD, could it be possible the author(s) installed malacious software that could call home or send private info to a site? Maybe Im being paranoid, but OSx86 has been running pretty well and I would like to run it as my main system. Guest bikedude880
I can assure you that no part of this system was in any way compromised. It is perfectly safe to use. As for malicious software... I'm not even going to delve into that. The OS itself is 99% pure Apple, the only thing that is different about any part of it is the kernel (and that had to be hacked in order to get it to boot on PC hardware.) loonymonkey
I thought about this some more today. I listen to "Security Now!" podcast, and they talk about different OS kernals. It sounds like a kernal could be compromised, producing security risk. I know you said 99% of the kernal is Apple, but how do we know that nothing else was compromised? Sorry if I sound paranoid, but I'm just curious. Purple Puppy
It is not unusual for most people to be suspicious of hacked software, especially pirated ones. Even I feared the malicious software in them before. However, after several months of using these software, I found them to be very reliable and safe to use. idividebyzero
If there was malicious software or any kind of security risk then we would know about it. There is none and if there ever is it would be widely known immediately. frizbot
Any software is suspect. You can't trust Microsoft, thats been shown again and again. You can't trust Apple, they show that on occasion. You can trust most Open Source programs, but maybe no one saw the trojan in the source. Your last option is to use OpenBSD, but I don't trust that Theo De Raadt ;-). Yes, the DVD could have been compromised with malicious software. Unlikely. Don't plug the machine into the internet if you're worried. tidalpassion
At least as of 10.4.6, what we've been running does phone home after a crash (behind the scenes). It is easily fixed, see this thread: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...c=44522&hl= Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/43764-is-it-safe-to-use-jas-osx86-security-wise/#findComment-325551 Share on other sites
