[b][Question:] Best settings OS X in VMWare?[/b]

This topic is all about optimal performance

for those who are convicted to run OS X through VMware instead of native,

like me. I am wondering am I using the best settings at this moment?

 

So, what are the best settings?

I'm talking about how to setup the amount of memory to allocate, disable/enable page file trimming, guest os, version, process priority, etc in order to get the smoothest, most responsive behavior?

Also should I alter stuf in the Windows XP host? Like altering the process priority in taskmamanger or something?

 

Btw I'm running VMware beta 5.5 built 18007

and specs below in signature.

Using deadmoo´s image with the 10.4.3 update package.

Pretty fast with default config but speeds seems to be more "constant" with this line in the config file:

 

host.TSC.noForceSync = "TRUE"

 

One cuestion: Has anybody non corruptud sound in any 5.5 version?

Did it. Indeed performance seems more constant. Any more hints?

I don't seem to notice any difference messing around with priorities in windows taskmanager, did you?

Any twaeking tips?

Using a AMD 3800 X2 DFI NForce 4, deadmoo patched to 10.4.3 I am getting using Xbench 19.9 while on that thread they are getting 40+. It would be really nice to replicate consitently 40+ with VMware.

 

Also set : guestOS = "darwin"

The processor0&1 use lines didn't wokr on my system...then I noticed it is for the AMD64 x2 processors...so it just might work for the lucky basterds who possess those kind of rigs...?

Don't be jellous the X2 doesn't make any difference. No matter what setting is used in the "processor" variable VMWare+OSx86 doesn't go faster and load is always handled by one of them not the two..

hey guys, how did u actually manage to install the 10.4.3 patch on deadmoo's image with vmware?

 

heard from another thread that it is currently not possible....

 

btw, i've downloaded the 600mb osxupdate.rar from the torrent site, but jus unsure of how to go about doing it and worried of screwing up the system as i have optimised it as much as i could to fit the system (networking, sharing etc.....)

 

btw, i'm running vmware 5.5 16958......

 

sound stutters with maxuss patch... seems to be something with the time sync problem.....

My P4 Prescott is HT and yes VMWare 5.5.18007 can handle it for two procs, and the application System Monitor with CPU History activated in Tiger x86 10.4.3. 8f1099 looks good for the two physical processors, each of them beeing watched.

I am waiting for the newer version 8f1111 to install, for better drivers (perhaphs).

Good for you. The problem is my Winchester AMD64 3500+ cpu is single core and unfortunately the amd's do not have HT (why I wonder, because the HT feature on the Pentium cpu's have proven to be an enormous advantage in running multi-media).

Me too. For what I read about it, we can expect it to perform better, more responsive than our current 10.4.1 built. Shame this new 8f111a built only has improved/working Ati drivers and no improved Nvidia support . Well, at least we'll have native iTunes and Rosetta doing Altivec emulation

OSX x86 Supports Dual CPU, Vmware Workstation cannot pass 2 cpus through the virtualization mechanism as the cpus are directly owned by the OS. Vmware ESX Server can do this task, but is a very large ($) exenterprise version of Vmware. ESX only accomplishes this as there is no HOST os. VMWARE is the Host OS.

 

Edit: Aparently Vmware 5.5 has experimental support for Dual CPU support passthrough. I wouldn't trust it until it goes past experimental though

Recently switched from 10.4.1 to Mac OS X 10.4.3 (8F1099).

Although it may not be tweaking in a strict sense,

is sure did raise the performance for me.

 

That tweaking feels like switching CPU's from Cyrrix 330 to K6-2 450 in my old socket 7 rig,

while this os upgrade feels more like the switch from that k6-2 rig to my current AMD64 3500+

The improvement feels that big. Especially in PPC apps and I'm still working under VMware, mind you!

Well, for better or for worse,

Close the 10.4.3 window in VMWare ("File"->"Close"). Manually edit your VMWare guest conf file (.vmx) and add the line paevm=true

and the booting process went alot faster. But I don't notive any improvements in apps as of yet.

Doesn't work like that.

VMware puts a directory in your "My documents" folder with the name of the VMware session

you've created. In the there you'll find a [file name].vmx file. Open this with wordpad and edit according to your preferences and with the advices on this thread in mind...
