vostok
I have been wanting to try out any linux, unix, etc, or something new, because I cant get osx to work on my pc... I am willing to install two Nix's on my harddrive. I have considered Suse, Ubuntu, dreamlinux, or any other ones I missed. Any suggestions for which two I should go for? Is there one similar to OSX? This question does not make sense, but, which do you think is the best Nix? Thx Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42982-which-nix/ Share on other sites
asap18
Although not noob friendly i think Gentoo is the best if you have the time to setup/compile. I have never used Dreamlinux, although I have heard it looks like OSX. Personally on my Macbook I only use Debian linux. I recommend you use Ubuntu (debian based) since apt-get and dpkg and very easy to use. If you do choose ubuntu use automatix to install software. vostok
Well, I now probably will install dreamlinux because it as I said before, I wanted OSX and this is close enough to it. What should my second choice be? Ubuntu, Suse, or anything else you guys might suggest? Also did KDE 4 come out yet? It looked nice from the screenshots. asap18
KDE 4, although a development snapshot (KDE 3.8) has been released, the actual release is slated for the summer. IN Linux, it really comes down to what you like and is easy for you. You need to try several distros to find the one you like. Ubuntu should be your second choice. vostok
I have just installed open suse and when I log into it, I see a grey screen with only my mouse. Also, a sound keeps looping. Any ideas? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42982-which-nix/#findComment-307537 Share on other sites
track09
Get the regular Freespire. It's free linux, but it has commercial software such as codecs, and hardware drivers. Surely the best route to go if you want an OS that's commercial like, but not OS X or windows. jana
I have only used ubuntu and suse 10/9 - both were really easy to learn and use, they both installed without the need for any drivers except ATI X800. The XGL/Compiz virtual desktop cube thing looks really good and can make you more productive (although some people say its useless) ( ) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42982-which-nix/#findComment-307610 Share on other sites

I log on and see a grey screen with an unfinished sound looping. Also the xgl/compiz, is that included in ubuntu or suse? asap18
Its most likely a xorg and video driver issue, what card do you have? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42982-which-nix/#findComment-307709 Share on other sites
vostok
I have a nvidia 6150 Le. Are there any links on how to get xgl, etc on ubuntu? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42982-which-nix/#findComment-307832 Share on other sites
Alessandro17
Do you know why I cant start suse? I log on and see a grey screen with an unfinished sound looping. Alt+Ctrl+F1 Log in as root # init 3 # sax2 That should give you a usable Xorg configuration. Now go to: http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html and download the latest driver. Use this HOWTO: http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html#1 If you find it too complicated, ask here. And BTW, I find SUSE the best *nix after OS X. It is easy, complete... Debian is also very good, but not terribly newbie friendly. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42982-which-nix/#findComment-308611 Share on other sites
joe75
It is recommended to use YaST for installation of the NVIDIAdriver. There are several reasons for this. First, it's simple. Second, and this is the most important one, you won't need to recompile the nvidia kernel module after a kernel update. YaST -> Software -> Change installation Source -> Add Protocol: HTTP Server Name: : download.nvidia.com Directory on Server: /opensuse/10.2 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42982-which-nix/#findComment-308629 Share on other sites
vostok
Ok, Im going to install Suse again because I reformatted. In ubuntu it feels as if something is missing? Maybe Im just not used to linux yet . Anyone know why Suse is a dvd unlike dreamlinux or ubuntu? More stuff? asap18
you only really need the first cd, all the rest are packages. ubuntu use gnome while suse uses kde, so that might be what you're talking about. Once you know some linux try Gentoo and xfce, its a lethal combination. bwhsh8r
Once you know some linux try Gentoo and xfce, its a lethal combination. vostok
oh terminal? Yea its like cmd but probably more powerful. Yea I played around with it on ubuntu when trying to install xgl/compiz. I did everything and then restarted my computer and I got a text login. I did the reconfigure command but I got no where with that. Then I typed startx and I loggged in but it was in gnome and I installed xgl on kde. So now Im getting suse with kde from the start. Then getting xgl/compiz. Could you guys link me to a good source on how to do this? Also anything else you reccomend for eye candy? Edit: You cant run any windows programs on linux right? Or any pc games? Edited February 23, 2007 by vostok Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42982-which-nix/#findComment-309272 Share on other sites
Alessandro17
Edit: You cant run any windows programs on linux right? Or any pc games? You can, with Wine, Crossover and Cedega (the latter mainly for games) Anyone know why Suse is a dvd unlike dreamlinux or ubuntu? More stuff? The SUSE DVD has many more packages out of the box, especially if you download the one in my sig: 8 GB. That is particularly convenient if you reinstall often, as Linux newcomers often do. Besides SUSE comes with proprietary plugins out of the box: Flash, Real Player, Acrobat Reader... asap18
You need xdm/kdm/gdm to start at boot, i know how to do this on gentoo but do not on suse. Try googling for xsession or xdm at boot. Does suse have the rc-update command? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42982-which-nix/#findComment-309327 Share on other sites
vostok
Ok well after the second install, I boot up by selecting my second harddrive. I installed suse on the whole HD. When I select my HD it says no operating system. What did I do? I have three partitions on my second HD. Some swap partition and two other ones. The second partition is set to boot (ext3, 4.37 gigs used) the third ext3 has 730 megs used. Also what is a linux swap? I just installed grub for windows and loaded it up. I selected opensuse 10.2 and it said: root (hd0,1) filesystem type is fat, partition type 0xb kernal /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18.2-34-default root=/dev/hdd2 vga=0x31a acpi=off resume=/dev/hdd1 splash=silent showopts Error 16: file not found press any key to continue... asap18
well kernel is spelled wrong for one. what did you do? why are you booting off fat partitions? vostok
Oh nevermind. I figured out that the suse install never completed plast the installation part. (Never set up a password, ect) This kept happening because the dvd I put in wasent in master dvd drive so it wasent detecting. But I fixed it and reinstall again and it booted . So far Iv only spent 15 min with it but I am liking it alot. I will procced to install xgl/compiz when I get home. Wish me luck! Edit: I have no internet and sound problems... Sounds play half way through then loop and dont stop. Its strange, I had perfect internet on the other linux releases. Ideas?
