coelomate1
Hello everyone... First let me say that I have a macbook. I bought it awhile ago so it is the coreduo, 60GB, 512MB, that cost $1099. I cannot thank the people (semthex, Jas, Maxxuss (tubgirl?), Ramjet, Prasys... everyone who is here working to help people make an OsX86 machine work like a real apple mac pro. I love the fact that my middle of the line hardware is running Os X 10.4.8 without a kink: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, Ldtk 6600GT TDH, 1 GB corsair Value Ram WD 250GB PATA AMD 64 3000+ (yay baby, the workhorse). el cheapo PS Pioneer DVR-110 Buffalo 54G wireless (can't get that to work) Everything is working great. Up and running for days, no problems, correct resolution, QE and CI no problem. Audio is done right. LAN is great. The only thing that doesn't work is wireless. I've tried a Belkin and a Buffalo and I can't figure out what the deal is but I don't care because the LAN works. So, here is the reason for the post. Since everything is working just right, really everything is tight. IS THERE ANY GOOD REASON TO UPGRADE THE KERNEL? I just want to have this system stay sweet. Will upgrading the kernel cause potential problems? Right now the only things that aren't 100% are the wireless connection, the fact that I am running itunes 6.5 (would be nice to have 7.0.2, but don't care much), and no SATA support. I have a fully functioning "mac pro" and I don't want to mess it up. Is upgrading the kernel only something to do if you want to test out things or are there real advantages to it that I don't know about? Ok, thanks again everyone. I hope everyone finds the new 10.4.8 tubgirl DVD as perfect as I do. (It did crash my system upon loading the first time, but I think that was becasue of the wireless keyboard... after a reset everything has been solid for days.) I couldn't be happier !! Upgrade kernel? Y or N? peace. My 2 cents: I do believe in supporting Apple, but they really are screwing the consumer with their elitists HW policies. This whole OsX86 experience shows that everyone could have a fantastic Windows free machine on a custom box. For allowing that not to happen I do not respect apple. Charge whatever you want for your software, but don't tell people what to put it on. (I know, I know Apple is a HW company, blah, blah...) coelomate1
Geez, 100+ people have read this but no one has any opinion on why or why not upgrading the kernel is of any value? I hope I did not offend anyone by questioning the idea. I was just really wondering if your OsX86 install is working top notch, should you bother to upgrade the kernel? ... (crickets chirping)... cmdshft
I upgraded the kernel because I was having sound issues. When I finished updating, all was good. So sometimes, depending on the problem, you may want to update the kernel because it might fix those problems. But if you have everything working right, with no problems, then I say leave it as is, until a update is released to go from 10.4.8 - 10.4.9. errandwolfe
I believe also Semethex and the rest of the crew doing kernel work are continuing to optimize the kernel, but barring any major new releases (which would surely be posted here in the forums) you should probably not do too much upgrading. Leave it to the bleeding edge testers for now. coelomate1
Excellent! That is what I thought... sometimes the idea of upgrading sounds really good, even if you don't know what you are upgrading to, but I think you both are right... if it ain't broke don't fix it Thanks! mykell9999
i think if you got a hackintosh box working pretty good, then you're a hacker at heart who can't resist the idea of upgrading to something newer/more bleeding edge. usually if something aint broke then i dont bother messing with it but after awhile, i get a bit bored, see a new kernel from semthex, read the changelog, then think ....hmmm.......why not........?
