denalijb
I've been working on my desktop Mac for ages it seems however neither one of my ATI X200 chipset laptops seem to install. Has anyone had success with these chipsets? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37840-ati-x200-chipset-any-updates/ Share on other sites

errandwolfe
Check out his/her sig and then realize that he has an odd definition of working. Yes with Callisto you can get reolsution changing, but as of right now, no one has been able to get QE/CI working on the x200. errandwolfe
Sorry I just get very upset when people say it simply works. It "works" right out of the box with VESA mode display, you don't even need Callisto installed. My version of works is when we finally if ever get QE/CI working. thedopefishlives
By the way, that might change soon. The Linux DRI project is in the process of debugging these boards and getting hardware acceleration using the open-source driver. As soon as it's reliably working, I plan on installing it and then taking apart their work and porting it to a Mac driver. FWIW, I helped hack the 200M southbridge driver to support sound on most boards, so I know I can do it. errandwolfe
Dopefish, if you can pull it off I know you will be a hero to MANY MANY people who are stuck with the x200. My laptop is non-critical, use it mainly only when I travel and Vista is amazingly simple to backup and restore. So, if you need someone for testing I have got the hardware for it. Good luck! thedopefishlives
I read up on Apple's documentation of the IOFramebuffer class. I'm not certain what I'm going to have to write, but in all likelihood, it will be a complete set of IOFramebuffer+IOAccelerator drivers. If someone could find some documentation for the IOAccelerator class, I'd be eternally grateful. errandwolfe
The last anyone has heard is dopefishlives was working on a POSSIBLE solution, but many have started that project before and here we still sit with no accelerated driver. thedopefishlives
The main obstacle to accomplishing everyone's desires is a lack of documentation - both on Apple's side with the IOAccelerator class, and on ATI's side with their closed-lipped approach to their chipsets. Unfortunately, it seems the Linux guys have gone quiet on the project for a while and I haven't heard any progress on their reverse-engineering efforts. I can't really afford to set up my laptop as a reverse-engineering rig, due to lack of time and the fact that my other machine is in a questionable state of operation right now. As soon as I can get some information, I'll pass it on to you guys. One other thing: I revise what I said above. The fact that Omni's Callisto 003 works with the x200 *should*, in theory, allow me to focus all my attention on writing an IOAccelerator module to crank up the chip. Again, if anyone can find time to search for documentation on the IOAccelerator class, or if anyone with XCode can read through the class declaration and create some documentation for it, that will make the process a lot shorter once work is ready to begin. andnever344
with the amount of people stuck with this chipset you think that someone would have made some progress by now... im not complaining im just saying Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37840-ati-x200-chipset-any-updates/#findComment-292108 Share on other sites
errandwolfe
Unfortunately this is going to be a fairly difficult process. The driver effort for Linux went on for well over a year and I don't think that really made many huge gains. It took ATI releasing a (closed source) driver for the x200 in Linux in order for it to get working properly. Short of paying for someone at rentacoder I really don't hold out much hope for QE/CI on the x200 . While similair to the x300 there is a dramatic difference in the way video ram is addressed. That has stopped any efforts to use the same methods as people with the x300. andnever344
id almost be willing to pay someone to do this, im sure im not alone. but yes, i do not think this will ever happen. oh well Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37840-ati-x200-chipset-any-updates/#findComment-292142 Share on other sites
errandwolfe
Unfortunately the cost of hiring someone to do this would be way out of our price range. I mean let's face it if you bought a laptop with an x200 you were going cheap. All we can hope for is that some of the kernel and kext guru's who lurk around on this site will eventually get around to helping us. fireshark
Not necessarily -- when I purchased my lappy that was the only chipset for laptops and AMD that had 'discrete' (sort of) video - otherwise integrated graphics. errandwolfe
Wow, I am very surprised. The only place I have found the x200 is in sub $600 laptops and sub $400 desktops. Well maybe some of you folks who spent a thousand plus dollars on a system with x200 can kick in some case for rentacoder. I know my poor ass (what can I say donkeys don't make much money) can really afford to contribute much beyond time and testing. kaurxxl
Well ... these arent only in realy cheap computers ... atleast I guess ... I bought mine HP Pavilion DV5074EA for around 1700 Dollars (allmost year ago) I didn't know wich video cards are better and so on ... and I didnt know anything about OSx86 projed or MAC ... Because if I woud have known more aboud mac, i woud have bought one. ATI x200M Video card (128mb ... OSX shows 16mb) ... Device id is 5955 I have used OSX 10.4.8 for a month now ... i love allmost everything about ... only problem is my video card. So lets hope that there will be some updates whit x200 chipset ... because I don't want to use that windows again Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37840-ati-x200-chipset-any-updates/#findComment-292790 Share on other sites
