DaveGee
I posted this to someone who was kind enough to respond to my question on what hardware I should buy for my Hackintosh... Due to it's content I think this forum might be a better place to get a more broad range of comments / insights. The author (among other things) was confirming a question I had about the P5W-DH and the issues that I read about it having problems with SATA... Below is my reply.... --- So, it's true that SATA on the ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe has some issues after all??? It's really hard to tell what information is current in the hardware foum especially WRT motherboards... I've seen comments from more than a few people (when talking about mobos) that seem to echo 'hey everything work great with this board' or 'this runs without a hitch' etc etc etc... and it's not just with the ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe And then I read things like (IIRC): IDE has and/or had issues SATA has issues Other Seagate 7200.10 issues (I heard 750GB drives had issues but not the other 7200.10s) I dunno what's what anymore... Should I assume a fully working system... and when I say fulling working I mean not just with 'things running without crashing' but with things running at expected speeds and functionality. Please don't get me wrong... I don't mean for this to sound negative (and as I read it.. it does sound that way) but I really don't mean for it too... I really do respect everyone here! People giving up their time to contribute to these projects for the benefit of us all... It's quite astounding and I just wish I had half the abilities of these folks. I'm just trying to put everything into the proper perspective... I'm still all for building my Hackintosh but if thing really to work FANTASTIC as in proper features supported and correct speeds etc then I would truly 'invest' in my Hackintosh (as in buy quality parts and do things 1st class) If however this is still very much a 'some things work' some things don't well then I'd rather not spend 'quality bucks' and instead put together a more basic machine just for 'playin around with' and then revist building a better machine later. Thanks for any/all insights! Dave ---- Searching the forums tends to be only so good since things seem to be advancing (and improving) at breakneck speeds and reported problems from just a month or two ago could be a non issue today. So that's about it.... I'd sure love to hear with others have to say.... As stated above I'm still quite anxious to dive in a build a system but I want to go into this with the right expectations... and more importantly I'm not afraid to (and would rather) spend more money if it turns into a really solid experience. In the end is it still true that: CPU: - A C2D / E64000 makes for a good middle of the road CPU with better than average overclockability (is that even a word?) - A Xenon (Woodcrest) of a similar speed and for only a few dollars more might make for even better overclocking - Any comments on the up coming quad-core C2Ds? MOBO: - 975 based chipset is a good (best) way to go? - BOXD975XBX2KR (Bad Axe 2 Extreme) is best? - or is the ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe the best way to go? - Any comments about NVIDIA based mobos? - Any comments on the up coming quad-core C2Ds do either or any mobo support them (and work with OS X of course)? Well that about sums up the questions I have.... any input would be great! and once again many thanks to all the people who put forth their efforts to make this stuff possible - you people really are the best! sg
the only sata stuff that doesnt work on the p5w-dh is the jmicron controller (the extra one), the intel ICH7R controller works perfectly (all SATA ports and the IDE port). aberracus
Answering: CPU: - A C2D / E64000 makes for a good middle of the road CPU with better than average overclockability (is that even a word?) Absolutely correct - A Xenon (Woodcrest) of a similar speed and for only a few dollars more might make for even better overclocking - No good you will have to get a Woodcrest mobo and they arent overclockeable, and probably it will use FBDimms wich are slower... - Any comments on the up coming quad-core C2Ds? MOBO: - 975 based chipset is a good (best) way to go? 975 is a tried and trur chipset go for it - BOXD975XBX2KR (Bad Axe 2 Extreme) is best? - or is the ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe the best way to go? both are very good, i prefer asus for branding extras and more OC friendly - Any comments about NVIDIA based mobos? stay away - Any comments on the up coming quad-core C2Ds do either or any mobo support them (and work with OS X of course)? they will work, no idea baout mobo support except that bad axe 2 has it. DaveGee
Wow! Thanks for all the info (both of you) the answers you provided most definitely reassure my (initial) decision to build a machine with some testicular fortitude (aka BALLS) To summarize the current info: CPU: - E64000 - A good 'middle expensive' chip - Good overclocking potential (as always YMMV) CHIPSETS: - 975 a tried and true chipset - 965 seems to work but a little less supported (??) - NVIDIA steer clear MOBOS: - BOXD975XBX2KR (Bad Axe 2 Extreme) - known to support the quad-core - not as overclock friendly when compared with the ASUS P5W-DH - Very supported - ASUS P5W-DH - Intel Quad-core CPU Ready (confirmed via ASUS web site) - more overclock friendly - 2 SARA ports via Jmicron (has problems) - 3 SATA ports via intel (no problems) - 2 SATA ports via Silicon Image 4723 (no problems) - Very supported Thanks again and if anyone else wants to chime in... I'll update this post - maybe others will benefit too. sg
nvidia cards work great now unless they have 512mb of ram or if its an 8800. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37625-2007-the-state-of-hackintosh/#findComment-268435 Share on other sites
