rollcage
The past couple days I've noticed that everyone once in a while I get this high pitch sound (almost like a chirp) coming from my mini whenever for a couple minutes. Could my hard drive be on its way out? Is there anything I could do to find out? rollcage
Well, finally got the answer to my question. Last night OSX froze, so I tried restarting. OSX wouldn't load up, so I tried putting in my installation DVD and doing a disk repair. I got a ton of errors about incorrect root counts and invalid nodes, and ended up with a message that the disk could not be repaired. I tried reinstalling OSX, but I got errors when trying to format, and when I went back into Disk Utility, I found that the SMART status of my HD was "failing". Hoping that this was some type of mistake, I've been trying all day to format and reinstall. Disk Utility wouldn't let me erase my disk as the HD is "failing", but I got it through Terminal. I got OSX reinstalled (in fact, I'm typing this message in it). My HD status is still failing, but for now it seems to be working ok. I'm just wondering what options I have now. It's still under warranty, other than I upgraded the ram myself (if I put the old stuff in, would they be able to tell any different?). I also thought about getting something bigger and faster and installing it myself, if so, what should I be looking at (something around 160 gb)? Or could my HD be ok, and it's just confused? Should I keep using it, or am I putting all of my hardware at risk? Thanks any feedback, I'm just confused at what I should be doing.... kevin_4e
If you're worried about going back to Apple because they might see the new ram, just replace the stock ram back into it for the time being. The first thing I would do is go to Apple and have them do some tests. Knowing what the issue is before taking any unecessary steps isn't a bad idea. Good luck and keep us posted Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37478-big-mini-problem/#findComment-278154 Share on other sites
asap18
Nothing to worry about, when you call apple to send it in they will ask how much ram is in it. They repaired my macbook fine with 2 gig i put in myself. rollcage
Not really, but it's off to an Apple Store tomorrow (hopefully), should be able to find out what's wrong then. I called Apple about it and at first the guy told me that it was probably software related. I'm not so sure that it really is the HD...after a fresh install it works perfect; after 2-3 restarts it's like it forgets that there is anything on the disk. Anyway, does anyone know if they will be able to fix it at the store; if not, about how long might it be before I get it back? I'm starting to go through OSX withdrawl (and Vista, I had it on Bootcamp). God, XP sucks compared to both. rollcage
I know this topic is sort of old, but: Apple replaced the hard drive for free (I took out the nonfactory ram), and it works mostly fine now. When I went to put the ram back in, I noticed something in the lid of the mini. It's a" black cube thing"; at first I was worried, but everything seemed to work ok so I thought I was just being paranoid. Yesterday I went to use my remote for Front Row for the first time since I got it back, but it's not working. I made sure the security setting wasn't set to disable the infrared receiver, but it's not working. Now I'm thinking that thing was the infrared receiver. I'd pop it back in but one of the metal contacts is busted off. So I guess I need to take it back to the store and have them fix that too (should be no problem since they screwed it up. On the plus side my warranty saved me $420.94... BTW: When I went to pick the computer up, one of the Apple Store employees had a guitar hooked up to a Mac Pro and was jamming out (REALLY COOL!). About 50 people rushed into the store as soon as he started, didn't think I was gonna make it back out. Justin R.
Mine did the same thing, until I sent it to Apple for them to fix it. Now it works fine. PS. I find this title a bit of an oxymoron.
