Soündless
i am building a new compy, and i am wondering which is better, a pentium D @ 3.4 ghz or a core 2 duo @ 2.16ghz. the pentium D is cheaper and faster clocked, and dual core. is there something about the core 2 duo that makes it better? Nekoi
The Core 2 Duo have 1066 Mhz System Bus, the Pentium D have 800 Mhz May be that are the big difference between this two processors. Try a Comparison Benchmark with sisoft-sandra this program have a list to compare many processors here: http://www.overclockers.com.au/sandra.php but only run on windows. sg
mhz doesnt matter... any core 2 duo will blow away a pentium d, you can also overclock the core 2 duos by at least 50% to get even more performance with default cooling. MasterBetty
As previously stated , mhz does not matter. It's the instructions executed per clock cycle , the efficiency of the processor. AMD proved this against the old netburst architecture , beating much higher clocked p4's with relatively low clock speeds. This has all changed now with the introduction of the core architecture of course. The fastest netburst processor ,965 extreme edition, can barley edge out and is often beat in most benchmarks by the $200 E6400. If you'd like to compare processor performance at various tasks , tomshardware has a great cpu comparison chart here: http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37100-pentium-d-vs-core-2-duo/#findComment-264392 Share on other sites

consolation
don't forget about sse4 for core2duo There is no sse4, there is ssse3; or supplemental sse3. Does any current apple software use that instruction set?
