the Power MAC G5 quad is out:

http://www.apple.com/powermac/

Funny, and I JUST bought a Dual G5 2 GHz... but I'd rather have the Dual Processor 2GHz than a Dual-Core 2 GHz...

On the other hand, I'd really like that Quad G5.... that looks sweet!

Next year, just before they transition to Intel, I've worked a deal with my boss that we purchase a wack of the last high-end G5's for our office. Why? We have lots of old Mac software that still needs to be ported over, and it may take a few years for us to get everything ported (I'm the one doing it, and there's about 100 different programs and databases that need converting from HyperCard to Revolution through CGI).

Looks like Apple really can't wait for the Intel Mac's, though. There's not much new in way of G5 processing.

Uh, why? Dual core is faster than dual processor, the new Dual core 2.3s outperform the old dual processor 2.5s.

Why? Stability. I wouldn't want to jump into something so brand new like that again. Have had nothing but problems when I do, and the original Dual G5 has been "bug fixed" enough to be extremely reliable.

Besides, it's for a server... don't need PCI Express for that. Saved $60 CDN, too.

hi newbie here, applemoto :), i dont know where i could introduce myself so i decided to do it here :D, this place looks good, i dont own a PC but just a iMac G4 17" 800MHz, im just a kiddo but heres the bit that would blow you away!, my parents might buy me that Quad! its because i dont want to have a intel Mac yet id rather have the fastest Mac ever on PPC. so yeah the quad might be mine :)

lucky!!! >_> i wanted it first

i picked up an old copy of mac world mag and it said introducing the new power mac g4 and i was like HAHAHAHAHA it WAS the fastest personal pc but not anymore and it also had the coolest laptop ever the clam shell ibook heh

I used to have a stack of Macworld Magazines going back all the way from present through 1987. When Apple announced the switch from PPC to x86, I recycled them all. Why keep them?

Anyways, I've never played with a G5, but I got our computer setup at work now (dual-processor 2.0 GHz [April 2005 model]). Works great! I still need to replace 4 G4 PPC Mac Servers next year, and I'm going to go with whatever the last PPC PowerMacs are. Like I said, we need it for software compatibility.

Our entire software system relies on something called "HyperCard". If you're not familiar, it's been abandoned by Apple since something like 2001 I believe. I'm in the (slow) process of converting our entire shop to revolution (same language as HyperCard), but transferring 30MB of code from one to the other, and writing the HTML to display it is really slow. As a comparison, I have a search engine for HyperCard for our invoices. Searching 5000 invoices over our network from a Mac OS 9 client takes about 5-10 minutes. I've re-written the search to run under revolution in Internet Explorer on the same OS 9 clients, and it takes about 2 seconds!

The Quad G5s make me drool, though! When Apple does iron out the bugs that will appear, I will definately pick up a bunch for work! That's the advantage of where I work, I have the ability to just buy whatever computers I feel we need, which in turn allows me to "play" with them! It's good to see, though, just for everyday use and web browsing, my Dual-G4 533 still holds ground though. I don't notice too much difference from the G5 at work for that.

Anybody else getting a Quad G5?

how can they give it away for such price? 2 dual core core opterons would cost that much only in processors and motherboard. 2.4 GHz Opteron 280 costs a fortune (around 1400€) so 2 of them would make 2800€ (genius, ain't I ?) and the mobo for another 450 to add up to = 3250 €s which is 50 euros shy of Quad. Apple is quite competitive in their pricing of this new breed IMHO but as usual within the next 3 months quad cores clocked at 2.7 and 2.3 will come into play and the "good-better-best" trio will be formed. So wait two-three months and you can have one at 2.3 GHz for 2300€ tops, sweet. (I know I am making this price up but I just followed Apple's pricing pattern I observed over the last 2-3 years)
