henke blomqvist
Hi! I'm a complete newbie from Sweden who got a (pretty) good deal from work last year: A home PC-kit including what I think is a HP Pavillion d4196.se. The product number might be wrong, but it's thed4000-series anyway. The specifications as I recall them are: - Intel Pentium 4 processor, 3,6 ghz - 1024mb ram - nVidia 7800 graphics - Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card - 2 internal harddrives, 160 gbs each - 1 external harddrive, 160 It doesn't match the specs for d4196.se, but that's the product id i can remember. Anyway, if it matters I'll look it up! As I've been more and more in touch with Apple products I've got the urge for OSX but I just can't afford buying yet another computer. So I thought that the idea of installing OSX on my PC would be a very comfortable solution! I suppose that the technical specs of my computer (with drivers involved and so on) won't be perfect for OSX, but would it work OK? Is it worth the trouble? I don't mind if the graphics are a little bit slow, as long as it isn't horrible (which is a matter of humble opinions of course, but I'm pretty picky.. not too much though ) Would it be functional enough for you to do it? If you need more technical specs I'll try to find it. Thanks! /Henke Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/36342-would-it-work/ Share on other sites
aberracus
it isnt trouble, hacking the machines is our joy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/36342-would-it-work/#findComment-258545 Share on other sites
henke blomqvist
But for me, who is a complete newbie it is. I can follow instructions but I rarely do any mods to my PC. Sure I'm familiar with novice tweaking, but I'm not very good at it. So for me it is trouble, but I really would love to have OSX installed. That's why I'm asking. Although, when it comes to guitars, tweaking, modding and changing is MY joy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/36342-would-it-work/#findComment-258553 Share on other sites
richtig
Is the P4 a socket 478 or 775? Only socket 775 P4 CPU's include SSE3 support. So you'd need to know that before attempting OSX installation. The freeware "CPU-Z" program can show what CPU protocols (SSE2, SSE3, NX="no execute bit", etc.) are supported. http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php The Audigy card is unsupported (no drivers). Either use onboard sound (if available) or else a USB sound adapter. Both mouse and keyboard should connect via the same port type: either PS2 or USB. henke blomqvist
Well, as I am a musician I haven't planned to settle for the soundblaster card any longer. It s*cks. In january Im buying a firewire (or USB) connected Presonus Inspire. The mouse and keyboard are wireless, connected with USB. I'll try CPU-Z when I get home (tomorrow some time) and will give a report as soon as possible. Does it seem like it would work if the CPU supports SSE3? Thank you very much! henke blomqvist
Looks pretty good to me: I have got a patched OSX 10.4.6 iso. Can i begin the installation now? I've had a look at the guide at http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page and it doesnät seem too hard. What do you say? SteveStar
What motherboard do you have and what type of hdd? Because not all the combinations work. You can use this site to check if your hardware is supported. And if the hardware is supported I should no longer wait, install that {censored}! SSE3 will make your life easier. There are plenty of 478 SSE3 chips. Just look in the compatibility guide under CPU's in the Wiki http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.4.4. I remember a thread that got JaS all worked up about this vey topic about a month ago...
