pcace
Hi there, i dont know how to give it a better title, but since the 26.3 update i have a very strange problem: my hackintosh makes weird whining sizzeling sounds when i move my mouse, move windows around or interact with the osx gui at all. i know that sounds super weird, but i can clearly hear it coming from the hardware itself. is there anything known what that could be (or how it could be fixed?) I am running a Asrock z690m-itx with correct USBmap.kext, Radeon RX 6600, with basically everything working. the config.plist is attached. Since this is quite new Hardware and it does not make these sounds in Windows / Linux, i guess its a software problem within osx. if you have any idea how i would even approach this issue i would be really happy to hear from you! Thanks a lot! config_nosn.plist Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/362431-whining-sound-from-hardware-when-interacting-with-gui/ Share on other sites
pcace
ok, i did a little bit of research, it is called coil whining, and comes from the gpu i have tried to add PP,PP_WorkLoadPolicyMask 1 in the device properties without any change, also tried NootRX with the change that i cannot boot anymore... so back to "normal" i have also tried to cahnge resolution, refreshrate and display port (dp, hdmi etc) without any changes. Any idea what i can do? Mac Hosehead
I was curious about this since I have a Sapphire RX 6600. I am running Tahoe 26.2 and no whining. With this card I occasionally have a hang right before the login screen and I have to reboot. This thread seems to have the most comprehensive fix for the situation you have: https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/how-to-quickly-easily-fix-coil-whine-coil-choke-noise.294015/ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/362431-whining-sound-from-hardware-when-interacting-with-gui/#findComment-2847766 Share on other sites
deeveedee
@pcace To confirm that you're actually hearing coil whine, run GeekBench metal benchmark and don't move the mouse while the benchmark is running. Do you hear the noise when GeekBench 6 metal benchmark is running? I hope i can find another solution before doing that 6 hours ago, deeveedee said: @pcace To confirm that you're actually hearing coil whine, run GeekBench metal benchmark and don't move the mouse while the benchmark is running. Do you hear the noise when GeekBench 6 metal benchmark is running? definitely. its really strange i can also hear the second counter within geekbench - a little tick noise whenever the number changes (i sound like a psycho^^) https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/compute/5884807 also - i have found that since the update to 26.3 i have a massivly decreased performance according to geekbench: https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/16757845 this should be more like 3200 / 15000... Any other idea? deeveedee
@pcace If you run GeekBench in Windows, do you hear the same sound? deeveedee
@pcace If the problem isn't happening in Windows, I think there's a chance that the problem is not coil whine. Could the sound you're hearing be coming from speakers? pcace
100% that comes from the gpu. With the case open and very closely to the gpu i can hear it too in Linux/win but 10 times more quiet. I am pretty sure it was not there prior to the update to 26.3. Did anything graphic related change there? deeveedee
@pcace I have seen performance variations with my Polaris (RX560x) dGPU, so there are changes in the incremental releases of 26.3 and 26.4. I don't know enough about the changes to explain why you're hearing coil whine. EDIT: The config.plist that you posted at the beginning of this thread is interesting. There are no dGPU DeviceProperties Two Radeon kexts are enabled: SMCRadeonGPU.kext and RadeonSensor.kext Two Ethernet kexts are enabled: RealtekRTL8111-was-working.kext and LucyRTL8125Ethernet.kext Is this your latest working config.plist? Have you experimented with combinations of disabling the Radeon kexts? Do you need both Ethernet kexts? Have you experimented with combinations of disabling the Radeon kexts? Do you need both Ethernet kexts? Hi there, sorry for the late response. The mainboard has 2 different NICs: one 1GB/s and one 2.5GB/s. both kexts are needed for the two different ones. i did experiment with the radeon Kexts, currently i have disabled all of them without any difference. regarding the dGPU settings. do i need those? i have uploaded the last plist im am using currently. i have cleared a lot of kexts, and settings which accumulated over the years and are not needed currently for me. Any comments on this now? Or other ideas? deeveedee
@pcace Thank you for the simplified config.plist. After reviewing your revised plist, I don't have any explanation for the whining, but I do have a few observations: You're using Radeon RX 6600 dGPU and you don't have WhateverGreen.kext or any DeviceProperties to enable iGPU. You don't need boot-arg igfxonln=1 Since you don't have WhateverGreen.kext, boot-args agdpmod=pikera and gfxrst=1 don't do anything. You are still using IntelMausi.kext 1.0.7. I have found that IntelMausiEthernet 3.0.3 works better with Tahoe Sorry I don't have anything that would help you to isolate the cause of the whining.
