Lenovo ThinkPad T420 with UEFI Only

EDIT: @tluck i just saw your second post! Thats what i was reading around but i never really found a definite answer, nor a definite way to reflash it. I Guess i would have to reflash Vendor, Device and subvendor ID, + Vendor name? Do you know of any working tutorial for this? I got the card working by just adding " <string>pci168c,2a</string> " to "/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortAtheros40.kext/Contents/Info.plist " Soooo if you know of any method... ...let me know!! Or maybe you could let me know what exact values your card runs on... ...ill figure out a way to flash it EDIT2: i guess i found a method. At least i dumped the Firmware as hex from the Atheros... did this with a tool i found here: https://github.com/andyvand/AtherosROMKit But i just cannot find the appropiate hex to change.. is anyone clever enough to find it? It is attached... Thanks!! hex_dump2

Hey, just a quick answer (+ question) to my last post. i did look at a acpi patch for controlling fan speed on linux and found out, that there are 2 more modes to 0-7. there is also mode 64 and mode 128. mode 64 is supposed to be "disengaged" mode, mode 128 is "auto" mode. if i try to use either one of them, nothing happens. so what i did is, open up my dsdt.dsl (former name dsdt.heat-step.dsl) in the efi/acpi folder with maciasl and swiched the line: If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x55)) // CPU Temp is >= 85C { Store (0x07, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 7 - Maximum Speed Else { to If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x55)) // CPU Temp is >= 85C { Store (0x40, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 7 - Maximum Speed Else { saved it as aml, rebooted but nothing happens (yes, i am using the acpi kext in /Lib/ext..... Is there any reason why i would not be able to engage this mode?? here are some links: https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=107512 http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Patch_for_controlling_fan_speed https://www.thinkwiki.org/w/index.php?title=Code/ibm-acpi-0.11-2.6.13-fan.patch&action=raw&ctype=application/octet-stream Cheers and THANKS!!! EDIT: I dont quite know what happened, i did some reboots and now it is working!? the aml is looking like that now: /* FAN control START */ If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x55)) // CPU Temp is >= 85C { Store (0x40, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 7 - Maximum Speed Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x50)) // CPU Temp is >= 80C { Store (0x07, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 6 Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x4B)) // CPU Temp is >= 75C { Store (0x06, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 5 Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x46)) // CPU Temp is >= 70C { Store (0x05, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 4 Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x41)) // CPU Temp is >= 65C { Store (0x04, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 3 Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x3C)) // CPU Temp is >= 60C { Store (0x02, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 2 Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x01)) // CPU Temp is >= 01C { Store (0x01, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 1 - Lowest Speed } } } } } } /* FAN control END */ Thanks!!!

Hey there! thank you again and again for your great work here!! I kind of missed the point here i am using the heat-step dsdt. And it is kind of working. I just realized, that under windows the fan can go up to 6500rpm. And i really would love to see that behaviour on the mac too. Not everytime, but when i am using this T420 in very hot environments... ...i do get scared, that i could ruin the machine - working at +100°C for hours and hours... Any idea how to achieve that? Cheers and thanks!!!! PS.: i do know about this here: /* FAN control START */ If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x55)) // CPU Temp is >= 85C { Store (0x07, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 7 - Maximum Speed Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x50)) // CPU Temp is >= 80C { Store (0x06, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 6 Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x4B)) // CPU Temp is >= 75C { Store (0x05, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 5 Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x46)) // CPU Temp is >= 70C { Store (0x04, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 4 Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x41)) // CPU Temp is >= 65C { Store (0x03, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 3 Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x3C)) // CPU Temp is >= 60C { Store (0x02, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 2 Else { If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, 0x01)) // CPU Temp is >= 01C { Store (0x01, \_SB.PCI0.LPC.EC.HFSP) } // Set FAN Mode 1 - Lowest Speed } } } } } } /* FAN control END */ But it seems that Fan Mode 7 is around 4500rpm. Wich is not the fastest it can go... cheers

Heyhey, i have a question about the fan control: i am using a t420 with an i7 2630 and was a litte disappointed with the heat problem running OSX. I never ran Windows on that machine until now. And now i realize that the fan can do MUCH more thant 4500rpm. On Windows it goes up to 6500rpm! What can i do to get this kind of cooling??? On OSX it usually runs at around 100 Celsius, when on full load. On Windows it does around 80.... Any help would just be great!!! Thank you so much

Hmm, thats kind of strange. I do use the heat-step dsdt - at least i copied/renamed it to dsdt.aml Is there any way to figure out wether it really is loaded? Cheers, Pcace EDIT: Ohhh Sh**, i am totally stupid i really forgot to copy the renamed dsdt.aml to the Patched folder.. ...now its working... Sorry. EDIT: with the fan controll i get around 10% better rendertimes with cinema4d - coz its not thermal throtteling anymore (even on a i7 2630! - Yessss ) EDIT2: To go back to the original question: is there any way to get rid of HWmonitor running the whole time? Cheers and thank you so much for your work & help!!

Lenovo ThinkPad T420 with UEFI Only

Hey there, is there any method to controll the fan speed besides having HWmonitor running all times? The BIOS Controll seems to be pretty stupid and i wish it would be quieter on low load, and would get up to 4500rpm on high load to avoid downcycling a little bit more.. any idea? Cheers and Thanks!!! EDIT: +1 more question: I just tried to use the provided method (using the ACPIPoller.kext) and realized, that the fan only has 2 modes 3500rpm and 3950rpm... on heavy load its 3950rpm and even on idle its 3500rpm. I followed exactly the installation example in this thread here... so any idea where i could look for the problem? Cheers!!!

ok, it seems that i have been happy to early ;( since i did a complete reinstall i havent updated to 10.12.6 when i did the last posting (it was still on 10.12.5). So now i did update osx and: i cannot boot the machine completely - or better: I dont get to the loginscreen. Everything fires up fine, but then at the second i normally would get the login i just get a black screen. Sh**. So what now? I am using the T420 without a Nvidia. What can i do to fix that? I already tried to use the Stock boot.plist from the provided donwload, same reaction. Any Help would be just amazing!!!

Hey, just a little confirmation: SoftwareRAID0 works out of the Box! (created softwareraid while installing, then the only postinstallation step was to copy the EFI folder to both (!) EFI partitions of the two RAID0 members... But be aware that there is some seriouse issues when updating to High Sierra since it seems that apple forgot the support for afps+raid0 (https://forums.developer.apple.com/thread/78908) Thanks again for everything! PS.: USB3.0 fixed itself after the reinstall by just copying the newest generic USB3 driver (https://bitbucket.org/RehabMan/os-x-generic-usb3/downloads/) to /Library/Extentions (see speedtest in the attachment) Cheers
9. Hey, i cannot get the USB3.0 Express Card with upd720202 to work on my Sierra UEFI install on a Lenovo T420. Everything works exeptionally good, but the Express card ist trangely not working. In the original state everything what happenend is that osx showed a new symbol in the top right indicating that i have installed an external card + the USB3 host showed in the systemprofiler. BUT no usb sticks show up. And now i downloaded this kext here - genericUSBCHCI placed it in /System/Library/Extentions - just nothing changes. Did i install the kext wrong? do i have to disable the original usb3.0 kext (if there is such thing) Any help would be really appriciated !!!! Thank you so much!!!

Hum,... i was not even thinking that it could be a problem using the Bay Drive. Isnt this is just an other SATA Port?! Is it more like: Baydrive will not work! Or more like it might be working? Cheers Pcace

Hey there, just another question from me... ..is it possible to get a raid0 as as the boot volume in the T420? (One internal, one SSD in the ultrabay Slot?) What would i have to do in order to get it to work? Cheers, Pcace

Yet another Thanks!! ...and another question: is there any reason, that OSX shuts down the computer even if there is 7 to 10% Battery left? Is there any way to calibrate or reconfigure the shutdown battery percentage? Cheers and keep up the great work!

Hi, usually i just consume all the great content here in the Forum, but this time i really have to say it loud: THANK YOU! For your great work, the extremely good howto and all the efford in keeping this here up to date! My MacBook Pro 15'' was stolen half a year ago and i had no money for a new one, so i looked into different possibilities: and the final one was: Buy a used T420 and use your Howto to make it run OSX... and boy - it runs great! I am not seeing any Problem so far at all (besides imessage, but i dont use it...) I have a model now with the i5, 16gb RAM, 512SSD and a modded 1.46 Bios to run my super old Atheros Wifi card (and besides the Trackpad it really is an alternative to my 2012 MacBook Pro !!! So i just have to say it again: THANK YOU SO MUCH!! PS.: i still have 2 questions: 1. Do i have to make any changes if i decide to use an i7 2630QM? (Any Clover configs or whatsoever? 2. i do have a second 512gb SSD laying around here... would it be possible to use both as RAID0 to increase read speed (is clover able to do that on the boot disk?)

GTX770 extremely slow on 10.9

Hi, i just got a GTX 770 4GB in addition to my GTX 480 1,5GB. Both Cards run out of the Box when not using GraphicsEnabler in boot.plist. First i was really happy, but then i started to really use both cards (mainly Thea Render, which has a unbiased GPU/CPU engine) and i realized, that my 770 has around half the Power compared to the power it has on Win7. The results on Luxmark Win7 64 Bit are: Both Cards: 2554 Points, GTX770 1351 GTX480 1171 Which to me looks pretty ok, On OSX 10.9 these are the Results: Both Cards: 1470 Points, GTX770 689 GTX480 766 Wich to me looks looks really bad - especially the GTX770. Where can i look for the Problem? Is this a known Problem? Is there any way to change this?! I am using chimera 3.0.1, and i installed OSX via #####, 6.3.0 Any idea how to fix that Problem would be awesome!!!! Thanks a lot, Pcace
