LoKoTe
Hi everybody ... i have an AMD 64 3400, 512 PC3200 and the Integrated ATi Express 200 ... and all the usual stuff. When i put the Generic mac osx86 dvd install in the drive and boot it takes around 10 minutes to boot into the installer, and then i can;t do anything, i can't select anything, i can't move the mouse, etc ... i already tried booting with -x, -v, and -v -x platform=x86pc ... so i was wondering if maybe there was a problem with amd 64s or if i'm doing something right ... i've tried the dvd in another computer and it installs and boots without any problems. Thanks you all Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3608-problems-with-amd-64/ Share on other sites

EtherealRemnant
Its probably the ATi Express chipset... I've not heard of anyone trying to run OS X on it til now so your guess is as good as mine but it seems that on the AMD field, only nForce boards work with little issue. walkerx
I have an AMD64 3000 (Venice) with an MSI K8N Neo2 Platium Mobo, with 1gb ram, maxtor 200gb hdd, nvidia 6800gt, sb audigy and it installed v10.4.1 without any problems. It does take a while to check dvd but the wait is worth it. Only problems I have is no wireless networking yet (DWL-G122), downloaded the drivers but ain't sussed how to install as when click on them they disappear. Also no sound, and not sure if need to install any nvidia drivers for gfx but seems fast enough in desktop regards walkerx Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3608-problems-with-amd-64/#findComment-23274 Share on other sites
macgirl
For nForce integrated sound you need to edit a Info.plist file, follow the Wiki guide. There are no working drivers yet for other graphics cards than Intel. Thanks you all Try using platform=ADP2,1, I had the same problems as you with it being terribly slow, but this cleared it up, the only problem I have now is no sound and no DMA. SixShot
I have an AMD64 3000 (Venice) with an MSI K8N Neo2 Platium Mobo The K8N Neo2 uses the Nvidia nForce3 Ultra chipset. Completely different from the ATi Express 200. If the 3400+ is based on the older Clawhammer core, you will need the patch for SSE2 support. As for the ATi Express 200, I don't have enough experience with the chipset to know its problems. x86 was only guaranteed to work with Intel ICHx southbridges anyways. SixShot
Using an SSE2 based processor will give you quite the performance hit compared to using an Intel Prescott P4 or Celeron D that have SSE3 enabled. The only Athon 64's that have SSE3 are based on Venice, San Diego, and the X2 models. Intel is the most widely supported for what i see. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3608-problems-with-amd-64/#findComment-23406 Share on other sites
LoKoTe
i think i'm gonna quit the installation, it's taking toooo long ... i think PearPC would work faster ... thrunner
Spend the $200 for the Intel setup, I think it is worth it for most people who can't get it going with existing AMD/VIA/ATI/SIS etc; see url below Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3608-problems-with-amd-64/#findComment-23417 Share on other sites

Intel is the most widely supported for what i see. It has nothing to do with the chipset and I don't see how a 754 Athlon 64 can have SSE3. The new Sempron 64-bit Palermos have SSE3, but not an older Newcastle 754. Another performance hit is not having DMA being enabled on the ATi SB400 southbridge. LoKoTe
thanks for the link, checking it right now ... and i just checked Sisift Sandra again and it does have SS3 and it's socket 939 not 754 .. i also checked some hardware forums ... SixShot
Sorry about that. I forgot that there is a 3400+ in 939 as well, good ole San Diego core. I am more a-custom to seeing them in 754. LoKoTe
but well, back to the topic ... any ideas why is it so slow ? Just for curiosity, i have a mac ... but i'm curious about the amd 64 support, cause as i told before, it installs and runs pretty fast in my friend's P4 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3608-problems-with-amd-64/#findComment-23448 Share on other sites
SixShot
Chipset support would be my best guess. OS X is detecting DMA on his chipset and not yours. His P4 is probably using a ICH5/6/7 southbridge for his hard drives while you are using the SB400 from ATi. Thanks a lot guys ! my work PC has the same chipset, and I had the exact same problem. just wipe out the harddrive first, then install... having FAT or NTFS partitions on the HDD seems to cause problems.
