Hi folks,

I just got myself a Xeon W-3365 on X12SPL.

Long story short, I tried tweaking my own setting as well as the EFI from here. But all I get is stuck on EXITBS:START.

 

So I hooked up a serial port and got the following logs right after exiting boot service:

I definitely have the XCPM quirks enabled and CFG was not unlocked.

 

If anyone can share some insight would be much appreciated.

Meanwhile I am trying look into the code, and swap for a debug kernel. I think worse case I will have to compile a kernel with added debug prints, or create some patches to find out what happened.

Is not too much?

The system have 256GB memory installed so I think that should be correct.

I've tried adding slide=0 and also disabling C-States in BIOS but nothing changed, still stuck at the same place.

But now I need to find out what went wrong inside _xcpm_init.

 

@Slice yeah I think that should be ok, as the kernel spinned up for a bit after bypassing xcpm_init.

Yes I did read through that thread, in fact I even tried the EFI that was working for him but it hang in xcpm_init for me.

 

I’m currently trying the create a patch to enable xcpm_assert and xcpm_assert_trace hoping that will make it print out more useful logs.

 

Do you think w-3365 could require a different CPUID1 to be spoofed? I think likely not since the eax we are spoofing doesn’t tell how many cores and the rest should be identical.

Update for today:

Still trying to figure out why is xcpm causing panic, but I managed to get even further with a patch in _xcpm_bootstrap and force it to set _xcpm_mode = 0.

I suspect it might have something to do with cpuid.. 

 

But finally, XNU was able to boot enough to actually print some useful panic message:

I'm not sure how to interpret this but cpuid_feature_display seems to think that the cpu have 128 lcpus, while it only have 64 lcpu, and 32 physical cores per package, 1 package.

Could this be the reason why xcpm_init was raising general protection?

 

But later on other part of the kernel seems to correctly configured only 64 lcpus.

@Slice I have that enabled. I believe enabling DummyPowerManagement solved the issue with HPET. It's maybe because I set _xcpm_enabled to false and somehow the old AppleIntelPM thing kicked in again.

 

But this just get more and more interesting...

it turns out Balamut's setup have the same ACPI errors(HEC2, and could not map memory etc etc) and they are not fatal.

What's fatal was the IPI timeout, unresponsive CPU bitmap thing.

 

And why did that happen? I have no idea.. But I disabled all 30 cores in BIOS, left only 2 cores on, it managed to boot much further again:

I don't know why it got stuck this time, seems like some issue with USB that's stopping it to mount root drive? It was booting from a snappy SATA USB dock, which I have the debug kernel installed on a small SSD.

 

But besides that, it still seems that XNU is playing with 6 lcpus while I only have 2 enabled(hyper threading disabled)... 

Could the IPI timeout thing cause by XNU trying to boot a nonexistent cpu(>64)? and why does it think that there are 128 lcpus... 

The issue with the number of cores/thread is totally puzzling…

X12SPA-TF was successfully booted with the same non-blocking ACPI errors but the expected number of threads and no need for extra patching in _xcpm.

 

Have you tried to boot other macOS versions, in case this is related to Ventura?

 

It may be useful to have a look at the ACPI tables, and the EFI you're using.

@etorix I've tried Ventura and Big Sur, to be consistent with Balamut's thread. Didn't notice much different tho, I guess it's probably because the early boot part hasn't changed a lot.

 

I had to disable xcpm with the patch to let it boot, otherwise it just crash in _xcpm_init for reasons I haven't figured out yet.

 

I've attached the EFI which made most progress and a DSDT dump.

The ACPI patches in the EFI were from the latest upload in Balamut's thread. I've only added few kernel patches to bypass xcpm, and tweaked some debug settings.

 

Maybe is there any other CPUID emulate that I can try? I guess the one in Balamut's EFI was 2nd gen Xeon-W used in MacPro7,1, which should be the closest...

The EFI folder could use a pruning of SSDTs and kexts which are not in use, and never will, or serve no purpose (SSDT-XOSI, SSDT-RTC0-RANGE for this board, and even SSDT-PLUG if you only target recent versions of macOS which no longer use "plugin-type" for power management). But I see no obvious issue. Maybe a different combination of quirks?

That's indeed interesting. I did remember I noticed that while I was purchasing the board. But I was convinced that W is a member of the 'Xeon Scalable' family.. Intel surely know how to confuse people with their naming. But Windows and Linux do works fine. And I suppose if the firmware decided to not support some model it wouldn't boot up in the first place.

Update for today:

With xcpm bypassed Ventura installer appear to boot just fine, all 64 lcpus correctly registered!

That is, from the serial capture it passed libignition and launchd seems to run just fine. Although I don't have a GPU attached so unfortunately no graphic for today, will try to plug in some graphic card tomorrow.

 

The IPI timeout thing seems to be related to KASAN kernel, maybe it was the debugger causing the timeout..

 

However, despite all the effort to stop xcpm, right before libignition kick in there's this "XCPM: registered"-_-. Well then, who printed this message when xcpm_init didn't even run...

:)  at first I just wanted to try how far I can go, but then it just stuck in EXITBS:START so I guessed GPU doesn't matter unless I can get the kernel to spin.

 

Today's update:

 

Plugged in a snappy RX580 and now it hang on PCI configuration begin..

I noticed if I do not connect any output to the GPU it boot up to launchd without issue.

 

Well ok now here comes the surprise. I noticed I didn't have WhateverGreen enabled, so I had it enabled. Then macOS started to output graphic to the BMC's display!

I would never had imagine that macOS will ever recognize the AST2600 thing, if not maybe even needed to have it disabled to prevent panic. Well, you'll never know.

 

I'm gonna plug a 6800xt and see what happens -> Ok, tried the 6800xt and it's the same. As long as there are monitor plugged into gpu it will crash at PCI configuration.

 

EDIT: just checked Balamut's thread again. Got pass the PCI configuration after having Above 4G decoding disabled.. But there seems to be some random panic after libignition. Also checked that there's nothing plugged into the NICs :)

 

EDIT2: well it turns out I was using a debug kernel again. So with a normal kernel it boot into installer without issue, on an actual GPU output!

Now it's just xcpm not working and that I have to turn Above 4G decoding off.

No need to disable the BMC ;) But set BIOS to output from the PCIe slot.

npci=0x2000 enables "above 4G decoding" anyway. That's why it's traditionally advised to only have one of these but not both. But workstation hacks do not go by the traditional desktop playbook, and may well use both settings. Try and settle on whatever works for you…

First time I hear about a relation between npci=0x2000 and "above 4G decoding".

Success with my X79 Hack came with npci=0x3000. I installed Monterey and all was good... except audio. Neither VoodooHDA nor AppleALC produced sound. :worried_anim:

The solution is TO DISABLE ABOVE 4G DECODING. Very strange but confirmed by me and other users of such motherboards. Now the audio is working.

Not true.

1. "Update your BIOS" is impossible as the motherboard is just from plant. No more recent BIOS exists.

2. "Make sure ... is enabled...". May be in some configuration it is good advice but this moment I said what I said.

Small update: adding npci=0x3000 now it works with above 4G decoding on, even resizable bar on.

Both ethernet port works fine and I haven't experience the panic related to them.

Had one interesting issue so far: displays won't turn back on after they turn off with the timer. Moved mouse and pressed random keys on the keyboard, but it just won't turn back on. The system is clearly running tho, I can ssh into it etc.

 

Could this be some issue with GPU? I have used this 6800xt with my previous hack and it doesn't have this problem.
