manifold_family
Heres a way to get Quicktime 7.03 (Needs it for iTunes 6) working on an x86 Mac. First you will need someone with a PowerPC Mac. Get them to update their quicktime via software update or via direct download/install. Copy the Quicktime Application package from the Applications folder off the PPC Mac. Rename the existing Quicktime package on the x86 PC to something like Quicktime1.app. Copy over the Quicktime Application package from the PPC Mac to the Applications folder of the x86 Mac. Reboot. Voila! a working iTunes 6 Video store. - I havent tried doing a direct install on x86 as I believe that the Quicktime installation (same as the Safari 2.01 installation) messes the Operating System files. By doing what I have explained above bypasses that issue. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3539-quicktime-703-working-in-x86/ Share on other sites
quixos
good to hear it's doable. one could also install it on a second osX86 installation/other partition and grab it from there yes? great info! on the other hand you would lose the speed and pro features of the x86 version. always a trade off. <_> Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3539-quicktime-703-working-in-x86/#findComment-22424 Share on other sites
intradink
Good news. I tried to install it on an installation on an external usb drive, but the installer says that it can only install to the booted disk. Could you post up the working files? leungda
I try the following. (1) I use a real PowerPC G5 to install the QT v7.03 and copy it onto a sharing folder for Windows. (2) I plug in the USB drive to my Windows computer and get the QT v7.03 onto the USB drive (3) rename the QT v7.0 on my x86 Mac machine (3) move the QT v7.03 to the application folder (4) restart my x86 Mac machine --------------------------------------------------------- Install the iTuner v6.0 is OK. run fine but when I play the QT movie on my QT player v7.03. I got BLACK screen but have audio output..... Don't know how to fix it. If yes, that does not mean you upgraded to 7.0.3, that only means you use QT Player of that version. Tons of QT extensions in the system are still 7.0.... macgirl
Exactly, QuickTime is not only the player. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/3539-quicktime-703-working-in-x86/#findComment-22674 Share on other sites
intradink
That's right. I tried the method above and found that my QT Player version is 7.0.3, but the QT version remains as 7.0.0... So no iTunes video yet. I'm confused by manifold_family's first post suggesting that they had it working. Hagar
ok, so i tried the installer directly, and i can't boot anymore... which new files do i need to get rid of to make it work again? Oh Dear http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=1843 One of Several threads on that topic. If you want to try & fix it up, your best bet would be to access it from another OS, say linux. see: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=3577 if you cant fix the problem, then at least you should be able to backup anything crucial. [EDIT] just a wild speculation, but maybe it would be possible to extract the file info from the installer & use that as a base for restoring all the quicktime files? KanadaKid
Here's how I got the Quicktime 7.03 player, and I don't have a ppc mac. I downloaded the Quicktime 7.03 installer from apple, mount the dmg, DON'T RUN THE INSTALLER. Right-click, show package contents. Extract Archive.pax.gz somewhere, inside it is an Applications folder, and the quicktime player application is inside. Rename your original copy, ala the original post, and move the app to your application folder. BLAM, new quictime.
