skredii
Have you ever dreamed about carrying in your pocket, your favorite OSx86 install. And boot it everywhere. When dreams come true... I have managed to successfully install OSX86 10.4.8 on a 2 gig pendrive. Now I bring my OSX86 install with me, and can try it on every SSE2/SSE3 PC's. Check out my full tutorial P.S.: Sorry for the double post in news sub-forum. borisbadenov
Hey, this is very interesting. Might this work as a live dvd? abcslayer
The speed should be nearly the speed of IDE drive with new USB 2.0 highspeed device but you must keep in mind that you Mac or any OS that have Journal filesytem could blow your beloved flash disk away just in few weeks. Because the flash chip's cell have limited write cycles (arround 100.000 write cycles), in journaled filesystem the system write to the disk even you or your app did not save anything on it. So please aware of that. Use a HDD in USB enclosure instead!. So you can persist data. I was able to do this with Ubuntu. Why not OS X. manmal
YES, it's a great idea! Thanks for that! It's definitely much more convenient to boot from usb2 drive expecially for its speed rather than from dvd (it takes about 10 minutes to boot from dvd, although live dvd is a very nice project too !). I will try this procedure very soon, as soon as i will take a new big usb pen Have you thought about a "shrinked" version to boot in a 512 mb pendrive for example ? It would be very useful too for maintainance... But hey, they are really not expensive anymore... I can't wait to try this live DVD project, and see what can be done Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35259-boot-macos-x86-from-usb-pendrive/#findComment-250736 Share on other sites
semthex
I like the idea, and hey, about jounraling, what'S about switching journaling simply off? The advantage to a live cd is that this ystem can save certain things alive cd can't it's a bit diffrent compared. This system is real usable for "on the road". McSkywalker
I'm adding this thread to my toolbar favorites. Very interesting.. I second the idea of shrinking the OS as much as possible. There could be different versions like one for maintenance, another one for basic usage (including browsing, etc.) and so on. Unfortunately, he stopped updating the program after Tiger came out, and never released a Tiger-compatible version. bubugugu
so I was told flash memory usually have a life expectancy of 1 - 2 million access times before it fails or data starts to corrupt, makes me wonder how long will a pen drive last if hacktonish is installed on it, cuz we're talking about 3GB of data and program constantly being read and written. i do not mean to discourage people from installing osx86 onto a flash drive but the life problem is the first thing comes up to my mind when i saw this. does anyone here have knowledge about flash memory product? Well, as I said, such things already exist for linux distro like Ubuntu or PC Linux OS. Check it out here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDPersistence Don't think it would be bad for your usb stick, maybe journaling is the only problem. Can anyone confirm this? Unfortunately, he stopped updating the program after Tiger came out, and never released a Tiger-compatible version. OSX has grown over time. A couple of weeks ago, I did a quick count of what would happen if you tried to build a minimal Live CD out of elements from a current Hackintosh install DVD. I came up with about 500 MB of stuff needed. Enough room for a couple programs on a 700 MB CD, but next to nothing on a 512 MB pen drive. Since it was only a rough estimate, there might be room to squeeze that a little, but at best maybe get 75-100 MB free on that size of pen drive. Should really focus on 1 GB or larger.
