I've recently purchased an old G3 iMac 350Ghz, 10GB hard disk, 128MB Memory. I've managed to install OSX Tiger on it but running on 128MB memory it's almost unusable when using something as basic as MS Word.

I know it takes PC100 SD RAM but on ebay many people are selling ones with and without ECC. Now I've read ECC memory is normally used on servers but would it work on the G3 and if it does are there any problems I may face by using ECC memory?

I need to buy the memory soon as my imac is just sitting on the floor wasting so quick reply would be helpful.

Any help is appreciated.

Well, I also have a G3 iMac and I had upgraded the ram, but I do not know whether it is ECC or non ECC. But considering that it is a consumer Mac with the aim of low cost, I can say that it's ram is most probably a non ECC ram.

I must also mention that I bought my ram from an Apple dealer. I'd recommend you do the same in order to avoid buying a non-functioning piece. :) They must be quite pricey these days.

Thanks for your reply.

I just assumed from the apple site that any PC100 SD Ram would work. But on ebay a lot of people are selling ones with ECC and given that there aren't many people selling PC100 memory it narrows my choices a lot if ECC doesn't work.

Major reason I haven’t gone to an Apple retailer is to keep cost down. This is supposed to be a cheap trial to see whether my family can get used to apple. If they hate it and I’ve spent very little then I’ve lost very little. And I just assumed an apple retailer would charge much more than the prices found on ebay.

Good luck with it, but even if ECC is compatible, I think ECC and non-ECC rams shouldn't be used together in one machine.

Anyway, an Apple dealer would give you the best info about it.

Good luck again. :poster_oops:
