David7586
The first time i tried apple update on my new system i had the j2se 1.5 update, apple quicktime, and itunes update installed...this was using the JAS reseed DVD with included semthex kernel, and about this mac from 10.4.4. After restarting after installation of updates, my OSX installation hung at the gray apple loading screen. was this related to the apple update? BTW ive also installed the itunes and quicktime update manually...all thats left is teh java update...im nervous...i dont want to install the j2se update if its going to crash my installation again. any input on software updates? panos_stealth
hi David it is normal that the system "hungs" after you downloaded the Apple's update 10.4.xxx All these updates are specificaly made for all "Apples genuine machines" and not for Hackintoshes It is not the same with Itunes,Qtime, and other programms because these are actually external applications - they dont upgrade the core- so they dont bother the whole kernel!! I would not update the java as it has been mentioned, that it causes some problems(i dont know exactly what) hope this helps (excuse my bad english) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34442-is-apple-software-update-safe-to-use/#findComment-244027 Share on other sites
westep23
Those three should be safe to use i even installed them on amd. Itunes needed a little fix. But don't install any 10.4.* System updates or Secupd. Boot with -v and see why it's hanging. Prasys
Update only applications I dont really use it , disable it . If you want , grab it manually. Open with pacifist , see if it messes with it /System folder /Library folder and mach_kernel. if it does , then I will skip the upgrade. Thats the way to upgrade and search the forums as well Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34442-is-apple-software-update-safe-to-use/#findComment-244093 Share on other sites
bgrau
Until now I have used Apple updates with no problems (apart from upgrade of OS versions), that includes all Apps and Java update and security fixes. I have not updated the latest security fix, but I heard it messes up loginwindow.app, thats easy to sort out by making a backup of yours then restoring it after the update, or re-installing it from a previous intallation... It will be good to hear the problems from those who did the update, some say they are happy with it...
