TANGCLA
I've been trying to get my resolution scaled up from 1024x768, and have tried the uninstall-and-reinstallation of VMware Tools to no avail. /Library/Application\ Support/VMware\ Tools/vmware-resolutionSet 1920 1080 Unable to find the service. What am I doing wrong? I'm on Mojave 10.14.5, and VMware Tools version 10.3.10.10540 (build-12406962) which should be the latest.

Naki
@TANGCLA - What is your VMware Workstation (or Fusion) version, please? EDIT: Also, which Host OS? Such as Windows 7, 8/8.1, 10/etc? Edited July 12, 2019 by Naki

Naki
Okay, what Hardware/VMware Workstation Level is your VM set to? Such as 10, 12, 15? Did you do any changes to the VMX file to make the macOS VM boot? Is this a CLEAN install VM, or did you upgrade an older macOS VM to Mojave? Try upping resolution with this tool: https://github.com/MarLoe/VMware.PreferencePane/releases/tag/v1.7.1 It is not automatic but works well to change resolution manually. Also, Workstation 15, but which one? Such as 15.0.1, 15.0.3, 15.1/etc? (15.1 is latest currently I believe.)

The tool does not work, it simply relies on the VMware Tools to perform the same task (and as a result the error message received is the same). I'm on VMware Workstation 15.1.0. Sorry for slow reply, was and still am very busy with other stuff. You are likely doing this wrong due to not following the Guide for this. I followed THIS Guide back in summer/fall of 2018 when I got my Mojave VM running: https://techsviewer.com/install-macos-mojave-vmware-windows/ Namely, I assume you did not do the step 6: Editing the VMX File. IF you did such a thing (edit VMX file as explained) please tell me. If you did not, likely this is the step you must do to make the VM work. I'm not sure if you've read my original post - the VM works, except VMware tools cannot set the resolution. For the record, smc.version = 0 already. Naki
Thanks! * 256 MB is quite sufficient. * You have Stretch mode enabled, disable that. Then restart your VM and check again. (or turn off VM, turn back on) Please tell me if that works, or not. IF not, indeed you may have VMware Tools not (correctly, or at all) installed. Do you see the VMware Tools process daemon as running in the list of apps in Activity Monitor? OR is it not showing there?

Still no luck. I've checked Activity Monitor and vmware-tools-daemon is showing. I've uninstalled VMware tools, reinstalled it, installed it over the top, but still no change.

fusion71au
Are VMware tools kexts loading? What is the output from terminal after typing kextstat | grep -v com.apple Do you see VMwareGfx.kext? If not, try disabling OSX gatekeeper sudo spctl --master-disable and System Integrity Protection (SIP), by booting to macOS via Clover or booting to macOS Recovery/Installer ISO and running csrutil disable in terminal. Links to Catalina thread on how to disable SIP (should still work for 10.14 Mojave)... post1 post2 post3 @Naki confirmed this method worked here. Naki
I should add as final step for me was "reinstall VMware Tools", the 64-bit Feb 2019 version.

TANGCLA
Should I just start fresh with Catalina while I'm at it? I mean, I've got nothing important on this vm anyway. Naki
No need, fairly simple steps to do. If you install again, you will lose more time. Boot into Clover, then he says to do stuff in Clover but I did nothing and just the booting into Clover made the SPI disabled. Check it is indeed disabled now using the command line given. Then reinstall the 64-bit vmWare Tools from Feb 2019 on top of the partially installed Tools and then resolutions should work.
